What has gone wrong with American democracy?

Even a notorious pimp was inspired to associate himself with the head of state by calling himself “The Trump of Pahrump”, and got elected to Nevada’s state assembly after death. What has gone wrong with American democracy? What urgent actions should be taken to rectify the flaws and improve the democratic system?

What's wrong with American democracy is what's wrong with British democracy - we are denied class politics and end up playing ludicrous games instead.

Would you care to elaborate?
Originally here only land owners could vote.
It was reasoned that they wete stakeholders in the running of the country.
Pols did not like this and whittled away at it so that vote buying became possible.
With vote buying came increased spending and with that the unimaginable debt we now struggle to pay the debt service on.

Of course it would be impossible to do now, but do you think the US would be better off by going back to land owner votes only?

The rule of land-owners was class politics, and capitalist business replaced it by class politics. When working people began to think that perhaps class politics might be a good idea, serious democracy was closed down at once, and we were left to footle on about brexit, walls and whatever other bullshit might pretend to fill the gap.

Not possible of course but yes.
Some carve outs might be appropriate. Military for example. They are stakeholders of a different sort.

There is not anything wrong with the electoral process...

The first problem that comes to mind is people believing that we live in a democracy. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner. We live in a representative republic. When people don't even know what sort of government we have, every manner of problem follows.

More to the point, capitalism is ten million sheep and ten wolves voting the wolves in on a policy of Carnivores First! Under current conditions representative government is even more manipulable than direct democracy. Unless the mugs learn to take responsibility for themesleves, we are buggered!
