China is a communist country, that has adopted Capitalist economic principals. They still ruthlessly control the population enforcing religious suppression, and other social controls. However, they have almost completely liberated the economy from central government control.
The former communes that kept the population in perpetual poverty, have all but largely disappeared, replaced by free-market capitalist businesses.
China is a perfect example of modern economics in action. Government control resulted in poverty, while laissez faire economics led to wealth. It's not surprising that socialist attempt to claim that the wealth of free-market economics, is somehow a win for socialism. A contradiction at it's best.
