Surprised nobody has posted this. Anyway Fidel Castro, after 49 years, is finally stepping down saying:

“My wishes have always been to discharge my duties to my last breath,” Castro wrote in a letter published today in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma. But, he wrote, “it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer.'

You never know, now maybe Cuba can go back to the pre Castro days. Those of a US recognized dictator (Batista) who allowed giant US casinos to litter Cuban beaches while the majority of people lived in cardboard shacks. Those jokers that fled the country, when Castro came into power, had it good under Batista at the expense of their fellow countrymen.

I still think Cuba will be better off without Castro. Fighting the bad guys doesn't necessarily make him one of the good guys.

My understanding is that Raul will remain in power for the time being. He obviously is not nearly the leader that Castro was/is. I wonder if they will have a revolution anytime soon. It would be an interesting turn of events if there was someone viable in the wings behind Raul to take the reigns when he is done and remain communist.

Raul may be a better leader, he is/has comand of the of the Military, but has also been more open to reforms and may be better able to make the people more supportive...and so long as the US blockaids Cuba, the US is a easy source to cast blame for its problems.

The Current US policy on Cuba did not hurt Castro, it was great for him...why does the Econ suck? The US....Why cant we get this? the US....Why is this policy in place ? the US .....

The Cubans who came to this country after Castro took over do not want to discuss why there was a revolution. Or the fact that they want to take back all of the wealth and land in Cuba that they owned before they took their money and ran.

Unfortunaltely, Castro has not been very good for Cuba. He may not be as bad as the Batistas. At least the Cubans have medical care, that is actually better than ours. If this country would try to help, instead of doing what the Cubans in this country dictate, we could work wonders in Cuba. But it must be helping, not dictating. And Bush is not good at that. Perhaps, Obama or Clinton will be.

I think if Obama comes into power then some real progression could be made with Cuba without it abandoing all of its ideals.

Perhaps. Obama make very little know about his ideas. And no one but Clinton calls him on it.

Actually, McCain has too, but it didn't get a whole lot of press because it wasn't a direct challenge. It was on Yahoo! News a while ago, I wish I'd saved the article. Basically McCain said that as the Republican candidate he would fight "eloquent but empty calls for change." Something to that extent.

Not quite that simple. The Cubans are now very miserable, and have been for decades. Castro is a killer and hideous oppressor. Marxism is a crime against humanity.

I've always found it hilarious that the U.S. Government forbids it's citizens from traveling to Cuba. It is clear who wears the pants in the U.S. Government vs We The People relationship.
