The Pentagon awarded a multi-million-dollar defense contract to a robotics startup affiliated with Eric Trump, one of President Donald Trump's sons, in a move panned by some Democrats as “corruption in plain sight.”
Foundation Future Industries, a Silicon Valley startup developing humanoid robots, landed the $24 million contract to test its “Phantom” android with the Marine Corps, according to a Thursday, April 23, Fox Business report. Company founder and CEO Sankaet Pathak appeared alongside Eric, Foundation's chief strategy advisor, on the network's Mornings with Maria on Thursday to speak about the technology and similar advancements in China.
The Defense Department unveiled its fiscal 2027 budget request on Tuesday, April 21, including a $55 billion ask for the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group, tasked with researching and developing military robotics powered by artificial intelligence. The Pentagon's total budget request of $1.5 trillion is the largest in U.S. history.
“Is the Pentagon just a cash machine for Trump's kids now?” Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote Thursday on X, responding to a clip of Eric's Fox Business appearance. “This looks like corruption in plain sight.”
Reacting to the same clip, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, a frequent target of the president, called the Trumps “the most corrupt first family of all time.”
“You can't make this stuff up,” she wrote on X.
The Pentagon did not immediately return PEOPLE's request for comment.
News of Foundation's contract with the Defense Department comes less than a month after an executive at Powerus, a Florida drone maker backed by Eric and Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son, told the Associated Press that the company was pitching its technology to Gulf countries susceptible to Iranian attacks.
