Human CO2 NOT A Pollutant?

A group of scientists and climate experts has released a counterpoint to the United Nations’ most recent climate report.

The UN claims that global warming will harm human livelihood and ecosystems worldwide.

But researchers with the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) argue that humans only have negligible impact on global climate and that “any warming that may occur as a result of human carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions is likely to have little effect on global temperatures, the cryosphere (ice-covered areas), hydrosphere (oceans, lakes, and rivers), or weather.”

The NIPCC’s report comes on the heels of the latest installment of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s climate report which claims that in “recent decades, changes in climate have caused impacts on natural and human systems on all continents and across the oceans.”

“Evidence of [man-made] climate-change impacts is strongest and most comprehensive for natural systems,” IPCC noted. “Some impacts on human systems have also been attributed to climate change, with a major or minor contribution of climate change distinguishable from other influences.”

The IPCC’s latest climate report has been seen as further proof that governments need to take immediate action. The IPCC prescribes cutting fossil fuel production and consumption to limit carbon dioxide emissions which they argue causes the Earth to warm. The IPCC says that the planet could warm between 1.5 degrees Celsius and 4.5 degrees Celsius within the next century.

But the NIPCC is skeptical of claims made by the UN climate bureaucracy. The group’s report “describes thousands of peer-reviewed scientific journal articles that do not support, and often flatly contradict, IPCC’s pessimistic narrative of ‘death, injury, and disrupted livelihoods.’”

The NIPCC, which is sponsored by the conservative Heartland Institute, focuses on the biological impact of global warming, mainly arguing that the costs of warming have been overblown — while the benefits have been downplayed by the UN.

“Atmospheric carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. It is a non-toxic, non-irritating, and natural component of the atmosphere,” the NIPCC reports. “Long-term CO2 enrichment studies confirm the findings of shorter-term experiments, demonstrating numerous growth-enhancing, water-conserving, and stress-alleviating effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on plants growing in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.”

“The ongoing rise in the air’s CO2 content is causing a great greening of the Earth,” the report adds. “There is little or no risk of increasing food insecurity due to global warming or rising atmospheric CO2 levels.”

“A modest warming of the planet will result in a net reduction of human mortality from temperature-related events,” the NIPCC argues.

This is in stark contrast to the alarms raised in the IPCC’s latest report that was released on Sunday night. The UN panel argues that its latest report should spur countries to act swiftly to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“What happens in terms of impacts of climate change in different parts of the world would be determined to a large extent on the extent to which we are prepared and able to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases,” IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri said at a press conference in Japan.

“Thirty years ago the greatest generation maybe was damaging our atmosphere on Earth out of ignorance. Now ignorance is no longer a good excuse,” said Michel Jarraud, head of the World Meteorological Organization. “We know, therefore we have the information to make a decision and act upon this information.”
