It's hard for me to imagine how suddenly an enclave of al Qaeda suddenly can take up commanding positions without some local support.  France thought it was going to be an quick clean-up operation, and discovered things were much more complex.  My fear is once people start dying - on both sides, the mission creeps to something larger and larger.  The next thing you know we have grand programs like counterinsurgency and nation building until we are dragged into an extended war.

 

Nothing is simple when it comes to fighting civil wars - and that could be what is happening in Mali.
