A close friend of mine commanded a cleanup unit of soldiers tasked with burying the dead after the Iraq war.  He said Saddam took innocent people off the streets and forced them to dig and occupy trenches in the desert to try to stop Americans from attacking Baghdad and those poor souls were shot by Saddam's own troops if they ran.  Many were able to surrender at the first opportunity but, sadly, many more died when the US rolled over their positions with tanks and bulldozers at night, not knowing the Iranian victims were being held captive in the trenches.
