NPC Deputy: Don't go into court, if possible!

Zhang Jun, one person in charge of China Supreme People's Court in the 3rd Sessions of NPC & CPPCC, claimed that people should try not to engage in a lawsuit as much as possible. "What's more, people ought not to dare go into court", added Zhang.

He explained that Chinese people like to stick to the principle that harmony is most precious from of old. Thus, the problems should better be resloved through people's mediations and other moral methods, just because engaging in a lawsuit costs lots of money, what's more, it will spoil friendly relations.

Do you agree with him?

I believe in settling disputes at the lowest possible level. If you have a dispute with your friend, try to work it out. Your friend should feel the same way. If you have a dispute with your neighbor, try to work it out. You neighbor should also feel the same way. If you have a dispute with your government, you should talk with an official. The official should be willing to listen and work to help settle your complaint. The problem is, friends can be selfish, neighbors can be mean, and government officials can be corrupt. In those cases you need good judges, and sound laws.

Of course, judges are just different government officials, so you're still likely to get screwed over. That's why free and fair elections are so important--it gives the people a chance to get rid of governments that don't listen to them. Of course, it's not in the govenrment's interest to hold free and fair elections, which is why gun rights are so important...

So, to prevent a never ending spiral of violence and distrust, it really is best if we just all agree as friends and neighbors not to be selfish, mean, or corrupt and work together to settle our differences. I'm not sure if Zhang Jun is aware of it, but that's what Jesus preached.
