I don't think that is true, but Bill Gates is not an expert on climatology. He was a college dropout and his expertise is not in Earth Sciences in any case.

But science does tell us that the current economic system is unsustainable, and that continuing to consume hydrocarbons will make the planet more and more unlivable. It also tells us that producing more and more plastics without any real method to recycle them will lead to disaster for human civilization.
