Tom Cruise and all involved in “Top Gun: Maverick” can take another victory lap after the movie’s premiere on Paramount+ became the most-watched film to ever debut on the streaming site in the U.S.
Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Chief Content Officer, Movies and Kids & Family, Paramount+ called the release of the sequel to the hit 1986 film on the streaming site a “runaway success.”
“The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital and now in streaming is an undeniable proof point demonstrating the power of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” Robbins explained.
“We are thrilled to see a continuation of the film’s massive record-breaking success by becoming the #1 most-watched movie premiere on Paramount+,” Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer, Paramount Streaming added. “We continue to benefit from the highly anticipated theatrical hits from Paramount Pictures that come to the service delivering fans a new way to continue to watch and re-watch their favorite movies.”
In a tweet on Wednesday, Paramount+ shared that “Maverick did it again! #TopGun: Maverick is now the #1 Global Movie Premiere on #ParamountPlus EVER!”
The Cruise-led film debuted on the streaming platform on December 22 and quickly became the most-watched film on the streaming service, surpassing “Sonic the Hedgehog” by 60%, Deadline noted. However, Paramount Global has yet to disclose specific viewership numbers for the film.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated sequel’s release on the platform, the company said viewership for the original “Top Gun” film went up by 400%, the outlet noted.
It is another win for the film after it surpassed the $1.4 billion milestone worldwide, becoming one of the top-grossing films of all time, Deadline noted.
The film’s success worldwide has made it the “Mission: Impossible” star’s first movie to ever reach such a milestone. The success of the movie did not escape Cruise, who took to social media to thank fans for turning up in droves.
“To all the films in release, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors: congratulations,” Cruise’s tweet to his 6.9 million followers read.
“To the audience: thank you for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you,” the actor’s message added. “See you at the movies.”
