"..The United States has been placed on a global watchlist for its deteriorating civic freedoms, marking an unprecedented warning from international civil society groups just six months into Donald Trump’s second term as president.
In a report released Wednesday, the non-profit organization Civicus ranked the U.S. as having a “narrowed” civic space—placing it alongside countries like El Salvador, Kenya, and Turkey. The designation reflects growing concerns over what the group calls “sustained attacks on civic freedoms,” including the militarized suppression of protests, intimidation of journalists, and the targeting of civil society groups and activists, particularly those supporting Palestinian rights.
“The United States appears to be sliding deeper into the quicksands of authoritarianism,” said Civicus secretary general Mandeep Tiwana. “Peaceful protests are confronted with military force, critics are treated as criminals, journalists are targeted, and support for civil society and international cooperation have been cut back.”
The report cites several flashpoints: In June, President Trump deployed Marines and national guard troops to California in response to mass protests against immigration raids—actions that Civicus warns “set a dangerous precedent.” At the same time, the administration has continued efforts to defund public broadcasters like PBS and NPR, moves critics say are designed to suppress independent, nonpartisan journalism.
Equally alarming is what Civicus describes as the “criminalisation of peaceful advocacy.” The report highlights a growing pattern of arrests and reprisals against pro-Palestinian activists, including international students like Mahmoud Khalil, Mohsen Mahdawi, and Rümeysa Öztürk, who have faced detention, visa revocation, or deportation for their views. Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, was also recently sanctioned by the U.S. government.
