The 1978 revolution in afghanistan brought in women's rights, land reform and a socialist program.

This threat of a good example promoted the us to fund religious fanatics ( see 911 blowback ) and forced
the soviet union to try and defend a socialist then communist government, with whom it had committed o a large
number of programs to improve the lives of afghan citizens.
