1. Biden says Putin's invasion of Ukraine is a test that the US and its NATO allies had passed, and vows again to stand with President Zelenskiy as long as needed.

2. Germany has collected “hundreds” of pieces of evidence of war crimes in Ukraine, German Public Prosecutor General Peter Frank told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday. In the interview, the prosecutor called for an international mechanism to bring war criminals to justice.

“At the moment, we are concentrating on Bucha and attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine,” Frank told the German weekly newspaper. He added that most of the evidence of war crimes was coming from interviews with Ukrainian refugees.

3. China said that the invasion of Ukraine has become a matter of "life and death" for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has no option to retreat from the war because of escalating tensions between Russia and NATO.

On Wednesday, the former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, Hu Xijin, penned an opinion piece for the Chinese Communist Party newspaper, writing that because "The determination of the US and the West to defeat Russia is very firm," there is "no turning back other than winning" for Putin.

"In other words, this conflict has become that of a life-and-death nature," he wrote.....

"Such a clash of wills is very likely to reach a limit point, and at that point, it is possible to use all means available for the victory of one's own side," he wrote, adding that Russia's position as a nuclear power should also be factored into any decisions to intensify relations with Moscow.

"When the war turns to a life-and-death struggle, if the West wants to win the final victory, it needs to transcend the confidence and strength that nuclear weapons have given to Russia," he said...

On Wednesday, Hu called for a ceasefire and negotiations "rather than an ever-increasing showdown between Russia and NATO."

"Please don't forget that there will be no absolute winner or loser in a military conflict between nuclear powers," he wrote. "Whoever tries to completely overwhelm the other side must be crazy."...

4. The "potato chip" gas-emitting White House incumbent seems to be both the setter and marker of his so-called "test" of Putin's invasion of Ukraine. That's why he claims to have passed the test (most probably with flying colours). British Foreign Minister James Cleverly declared that Britain has the “strategic endurance” to see Ukraine “through to victory” over Russia. Those two clever people are still living in the world of their own.

It is inconceivable for the largest country on earth with an arsenal of 6,255 nuclear warheads to surrender willingly like militarist Japan in 1945. It is naive for the US and its NATO allies to expect Putin to withdraw from Ukraine, admit defeat and to be hanged with all other Russian officials for war crimes. Russia's fate would be worse than Japan's if it is defeated in the war. Russia will be dismembered with large parts of its land returned to former states.

Like what has been experienced by Japan after its defeat in the Second World War, Russia will end up as a protectorate with American troops stationed permanently in the country. Like their Japanese counterparts, Russia's future rulers will be forced to obey their American master like poodles licking boots in foreign affairs.

At this point of time, it is too late for a ceasefire and negotiations. Any ceasefire without territorial gains for Putin will be catastrophic for the Russian leader and his country. A retreat after so many Russian soldiers' deaths will be regarded as a defeat for Putin and Russia. He will be charged for war crimes, and the US and EU will apply more sanctions on Russia. Even if Putin would not be hanged for war crimes, he could face a coup as pointed out by Victor Andrusiv, Adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

The Russo-Ukrainian War has become a life-and-death struggle for Putin and Russia. Using a Chinese idiom meaning "fighting with one's back to the sea" ( 背水一战 ), there is no retreat for Putin and Russia. However, it is too early for the US and its allies to celebrate. The war could end up as the longest war in history, lasting more than 800 years.

That is not too bad when compared with another possible consequence. Don't forget that Russia still has the last resort to save itself from total defeat and destruction.
