Vietnam!

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy decided to conduct a “counterinsurgency operation” in South Vietnam to cope with a deteriorating military and political situation in the country. There were 16,000 US military personnel supporting the South Vietnamese Army in its struggle against a Communist insurgency in 1963, the last year of his presidency. After Kennedy’s death, his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson acted to escalate US involvement in the war, sending tens of thousands of ground troops to South Vietnam from the United States. By 1968, the United States had 548,000 troops in Vietnam. Most historians see this as a major mistake made by Lyndon B. Johnson.

I used to work in the construction business. LBJ was a major stockowner of Brown and Root which ended up with the exclusive contract to build all Naval bases in Vietnam.

And those millions who lost their lives and those millions who survived only to suffer under totalitarianism after the commies took over, can thank the Dem Party.
It was a democratic fiasco, but it was Nixon and Kissinger who committed an unnecessary genocide in order to get "peace with honor". In that conflict over a million Vietnamese were lost the years it lasted, and before that there had been the conflicts with the French and then WWII. But all the movies are about the mental problems of American soldiers, and what the US did to its own young? There is nothing about the farmer caught in the field, his sons or his daughters. Very few Hollywood movies. One of the great short story writers of Vietnam was a man who died in the 50s called Nam Cao, his work does not receive much attention outside Vietnam. He published a book called Border Stories, with short stories about conflict from the Vietnamese perspective.

American leftists ignored the patriotic desires of millions of South Vietnamese people fighting the communist aggressor to remain free, but leftists have a strange habit of siding with the oppressors instead of the oppressed.

It was a long struggle for Vietnamese independence against the French, then WWII, then the US. If the nationalist element had been recognized and understood, the US would never have gotten involved.

Millions of South Vietnamese civilians and soldiers welcomed US help in their fight against the invading fascist communist oppressors. I joined the US Army intending to go to Vietnam also, but the Army never sent me there even though the conflict ended after my enlistment was up.
