If Jesus had been an American

seems like a nice enough guy for a millionaire socialist. but the point remains, people are n ot busting his chops for all the peace and love stuff.

Point is that the right wing is not out trying to be the one people think is most like him. They do for Jesus..that pacisifist Ahole who gave health care to people without charge.

That point has no merit. Jesus did not force anyone to give him money or aid so that he could redistribute it to those who he felt needed it. He used what he had to do his work, and nothing more.

Attempting to equate forced government aid to how the bible describes Jesus is being entirely dishonest.

they would call him a long haired dirty hippie.

At the time of his life, long hair, beard etc were the norm. It is unlikely that the appearance of Jesus would be outside the societal norms of the time. If he were here today, he would most likely appear as an average person.

In fact the religious right would brand Jesus a socialist and work hard to discredit him

No one on the right brands anyone a socialist who uses their own money/talents to help others. It is only when they attempt to force others to do the same that problems arise.

except He was apolitical so what you suggest is just anti-theist malarkey.

It depends on who you take the perspective of if he was indeed "apolitical". Imagine you are a Roman, and you hear Jesus preaching about the "Kingdom of God" on Earth -- you would immediately notice that in such a "kingdom" there is no mention of Rome -- a bold political statement at the time.

It is interesting to reread the bible through a political historical lens.

I suppose if you didn't catch the "render unto Caesar..." bit you could say so.

I read it as a political answer to a political to a political question -- one of taxes (which is the context of that question) and the debate between refusing to pay them etc.

If you look at it in a far broader context -- that is not addressing the "Kingdom of Heaven" issue in which the Romans are clearly not part of the picture -- which can easily (and would definitely be) interpreted as a direct challenge to absolute Roman rule at the time.

Well there was no politics at the Roman level, hardly any at the local level. Taxes were about all government meant to the average Joseph. But I feel His intent was clear, earthly matters were no concern of His and no excuse to fail in one's service to God. But to the average Roman Legion the finer point like these could easily be lost.

All banks that frankly have no business being in business anymore.

In a sane nation....they would be out of business. But, since our government no longer lives by the rule of law and has imposed crony capitalism (AKA Market Socialism) upon us, they are still in business and we are headed for insanity.

Ah come on guys... DC felt badly for having made them take all those bad loans they just had to do something.

The lesson that needs to be learned from this and is NOT being learned is that govt has no business interfering in business.
