American Imperialism

The whole political landscape these days-the whole swamp-is divided between peacenik leftists who think war is wrong because it hurts children and other living things, and neocons who back the Iraq disaster even though they know it means pouring American lives (though not their lives) and money into the sewer.

I love you. You sit in your office wanking over bondage porn, and complain that we are all pussies for not going out and fighting against Iraqs. Why don't you? Go lonewolf. Buy an AK47 and see how long you last. Please do it. Please.

People like me are getting so rare nobody even recognizes one of us when they come across it. We're like those damn woodpeckers flapping around the swamps, except nobody's looking for us. Hell, they'd send the exterminator out if they saw one.

There's nobody speaking for simple pro-Americans like me, except maybe Pat Buchanan (and he weirds me out too with his thing about Mexicans. What's wrong with Mexicans? They're the best soldiers we've got. Just check the casualty lists from Iraq: they read like the employee timesheet at your local burrito shack.)

LOL

OK, OK, so I'm slow, but I get it now. Say, fellow bloggers, you do recognize satire when you read it, don't you?

Or is anyone taking this little bit of prose seriously at this point?

Imperialism certainly has its benefits as well as its drawbacks. Really, for it to be successful you have to make those you govern over part of your government as well. If you alienate them and treat them as second class citizenery you will be doomed to failure. I'd support American colonialism if it was done in the correct manner.

Do you have any example from the history of the world in which colonialism has been a success?

Yep, when the Brits reigned over Africa and half the known world. They brought civilization, culture and religion to the ignorant masses. Since the Brits have been forced out of their empire these countries are like dangerous children playing with modern weaponry killing each other off. See : South Africa

Why would he want an AK-47? It's really not that great, there are much better weapons.

Do you think, then, that it's time for the US to take up the White Man's Burden?

Take up the White Man's burden--
And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better,
The hate of those ye guard--
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah, slowly!) toward the light:--
"Why brought he us from bondage,
Our loved Egyptian night?"

Take up the White Man's burden--
Ye dare not stoop to less--
Nor call too loud on Freedom
To cloke your weariness;
By all ye cry or whisper,
By all ye leave or do,
The silent, sullen peoples
Shall weigh your gods and you.

I wonder just how the "silent sullen peoples" we go to liberate will judge our gods and us?

While Britain may have been better then many other colonial powers, they still were not all that successful. In some of their prior colonies - like India, they left a pretty successful legacy. In others - like the British Mandate in the Middle East, they left a mess.

In many cases, former colonies only served to provide cheap labor and abundent raw materials that would be sent to Europe for processing so they did not benefit form industrialization or modernization. Part of the mess was the drawing of artificial boundaries forcing together dissimilar and even antagonistic peoples into one artificial country.

Over all - the history of colonialism is not a good one for the former colonies.
