For it.

I agree with the Great Ted Nugent..."I don't like repeat offenders. I like dead offenders."

The DP when properly used, is a very effective deterrent. I know you lefties have been taught since birth that it does not deter, but it does for most people. It may not deter the jihadist, crazy nuts, or the jealous husband/wife. But, it does for just about everyone else who considers murdering someone.

I had to laugh when that leftwing hack Brian Williams through that joke of question at Perry in the last debate. Liberals:rolleyes:..."can you sleep at night"...said with a limp wrest...what a dick.

Yes, under the best circumstances. But since in the US we never have the best circumstances I would not be in favor or actually administering the death penalty. It should not be removed from the theoretical options available to the penal system but it also should not be used at this time.

As Pandora would say: "HORSE CRAP!"

Death penalty is NOT a deterrent. Never has been. In fact, if you ask people whether they would prefer a "quick death" (like being shot by a policeman during a robbery), or a life sentence with no chance of parole in a high security prison. . .most would choose to die quickly, rather than to spend the rest of their life in jail!

Good point. A lifetime behind bars has to be a harsher punishment than a quick and painless death.

If we lock them up and throw away the key, they aren't going to re offend, are they?

Obviously NEITHER the fear of death nor the fear of prison stops criminals from committing crime - though both stop re-offenses. I would not throw away the option of jail because it is not a deterrent nor would I throw away the option of the DP because it is not a deterrent.

Were the punishment swift and immediate both would deter crime almost 100%. If as one reached through an open window to steal one was always caught and killed on the spot that would stop reaching through windows to steal completely. But justice can never be so obvious and certain in this world.

In the next world justice will be certain (even if not believed in now) but that too is not swift.

Therefore while one should not argue that the DP is a deterrent that does not mean that for other reasons and in a more perfect criminal justice system it should not be employed.

But having agreed that the DP is not a deterrent is it true that there is no such thing as a deterrent? Clearly I think there exist a lot of people who are deterred from committing crimes for some reasons. What are those reasons?

Consider this hypothetical poll:

Q1. If you could commit a crime and get away with it would you?
Q2. If you could commit a crime and you would get caught would you?

Does anyone doubt that more would answer yes to Q1?
