Even with the astonishing revenues from the dot com boom, they managed to spend like drunks.

Evidently you have never had to do a basic college research paper. All claims and statements have to have endnotes/footnotes. If you want to make a claim and you want to be taken seriously, a citation with that claim is the correct procedure. Just stating "it is easy to look it up", is the signature of the uneducated and/or a dolt. Citations are necessary.
