Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy said the quiet part out loud about his Democratic Party when he admitted that Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani's communist views are the future of his party.

CNN's Kasie Hunt asked Murphy about last week's shocking upset in the Democratic New York mayoral primary when the self-described socialist who wants government-owned grocery stores, rent freezes, and refuses to condemn the antisemitic phrase "Globalize the intifada!" emerged as the victor over disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Hunt asked Murphy if Mamdani "is the future of the Democratic Party."

The senator replied that, "I think his message, his economic message, is the future of the [Democratic] Party."

Socialists suffering from socialism know for a fact that socialism is brutal and oppressive. Socialist leaders enjoying the good life in a socialist nation plagued by poverty and suffering still praise the benefits of socialism. Go figger.

And the contrast between communism’s scarcity and capitalism’s abundance continues to be a visually powerful commonplace. Compare the results of a Google image search for “American grocery store” and “Cuban grocery store” and you’ll see what I mean. In a February 2016 blog post about travel to Cuba titled “Blockade, Bureaucracy, and Groceries,” Rick Steves even explicitly invokes the connection to Soviet communism in his description of this photograph:

The store reminded me of similar stores in the USSR 30 years ago: almost no variety…just long rows of very basic products with labels seemingly produced by some tasteless government bureaucrat. Milk was milk—there wasn’t a hint of any varieties of milk.
