Economy Returns to growth After Deep Slump

Yep, the Obama flunkies always bash George Bush no matter what the thread is about!

If your gonna mention Bush, mention this also:

Bush - 5% unemployment
Obama - 17.5 unemployment and rising!

YOu have to make your measurements using the same standard.

Its Bush - 5%
Obama - 10.2%

Or

Bush 5% plus underemployment
Obama 17.5%

When a guy drives a car off a cliff... that's the problem... the guy drove the car off the cliff!

But the pubbies don't want to blame that driver they want to blame the rescue crew for not cleaning up the wreckage at the bottom of the hill quick enough.

Bizarre... very bizarre.

Dr Who - you have a point, but the underemployed have grown fast under Obama in just under a year. And unemployment was well under 5% under Bush over half his 8 years. I believe the underemployed rate under Bush was even lower relatively speaking.

We haven't seen the worst of Obama yet, so time will prove him so much worse!

But if we must compare presidents, how about comparing Obama to Carter?
Now, which one of those 2 was worse?

I know the answer, I'm just curious if you do?

From NBC's Mark Murray
With President Bush set to leave the White House less than two weeks from now, here's a "Then and Now" to show what the United States looked like when Bush was entering office and what it looks like now as he's leaving. The "Then" is the best-available figure as Bush was taking office in 2001. The "Now" is the most recent figure.
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE
Then: 4.2% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, January 2001)
Now: 6.7% (Bureau of Labor Statistics, November 2008)

Did you 'selective forget' that the predictions were for the unemployment figures to be at or around 10% in 2009...this was foretold to us last November 2008...but I bet you didn't read that either:confused:

U.S. Unemployment Rates Under President Bush Continue to Climb

Posted by Kristina Cowan
U.S. unemployment rates under President Bush have reached a 14-year high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment climbed to 6.5 percent in October, as the country shed 240,000 jobs. U.S. unemployment rates under President Bush have certainly increased--for example, the unemployment rate for October 2007 was 4.7 percent. So far this year, the country has lost 1.2 million jobs, and over half of the decrease took place in just the last three months. Some suggest the situation could grow more bleak: Goldman Sachs projects the unemployment rate will reach 8.5 percent by the end of 2009. Another source I spoke with recently believes it could soar as high as 10 percent in the near future.
With U.S. unemployment rates under President Bush rising, there's more talk of the nation being caught in a recession. In a New York Times story, Stuart G. Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh, notes, “The economy is slipping deeper into a recessionary sinkhole that is getting broader. The layoffs are getting larger, and coming faster. We’re likely to see at least another six months of more jobs reports like this.” In a Wall Street Journal roundup of economists' reactions to the unemployment report, Joshua Shapiro of MFR Inc. says, "History tells that once the labor market weakens as much as it has in the past several months, job-shedding takes on a life of its own and tends to persist for a long while. We expect the employment data to be dreadful for many months to come and consequently for consumer spending to continue to decline."
The job losses were far-reaching: manufacturing lost 90,000 jobs, construction shed 49,000, professional and business services saw a decline of 51,000, and retail trade employment lost 38,000. Health care, however, added 26,000 jobs.
As the unemployment rate in America increases and President Bush's tenure draws to a close, all eyes are on President-elect Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress set to take the reins in Washington in January. Will the new leadership provide relief?

Yep, it only took G.W.B. to set a all time 14 year record for the worst unemployment rate and the predictions for the continual slide seem to be SPOT ON...GEE WHO KNEW:confused:

It's all well and good to look for first causes. But it is disingenuous to look back and stop looking back when you happen to be at the doorstep of the party you happen to dislike.

The roots of our problem go back and back and back. Both parties have contributed but one party has consistently rewarded sloth while the other has consistently rewarded corporatism - both share the blame.

The housing crisis, to the extent that one can untangle it from the rest of the economy, falls upon those who created Fannie and Freddie and the laws that governed the housing industry as well as those who did not change the system when they were in power.

The only correct solution is to reduce the impact of both parties that have failed us. We need less government intrusion and more government doing its constitutional role of protecting rights.

Carter was a bumbler. But P Obama is bringing us into socialism. That is far more dangerous. I only wish that P Obama was as inept as Carter.

Yes Dr. Who! Obama is worse than Carter in other ways.
Jimmy Carter was terrible as far as the economy goes, so to ever
compare another president to him, takes some serious consideration.

Do you know GM had hundreds of thousands of workers at that time, even if
they weren't hiring. But how many workers does Govt Motors have now, that could
retire or be replaced?

Back then you might be able to find a part time job here or there, but it's harder nowadays.

It used to be, that the man alone could support a family.
So the wife could always take a job to help out in dire times, and as long as one had a job, they could survive.

But today both parents need a job in most cases. That's not Obama's fault, but
it is partly due to Liberal Democrat Policies.

Of course time and technology have reduced the need for some jobs, but
nobody expects decent jobs to come back under Obama policies.

Obam's stimulus has failed to produce jobs for the little people and that is his
fault!

If the Obama Admin thought the economy were really getting better,
they wouldn't waste taxpayer money on home buyer incentives, nor would they extend unemployment benefits for half a year.

It's gettin worse and they know it!

The economy isn't getting worst the last time I checked. It's not getting much better, its kind of just staying at the same place. Not saying that the Obama administration is handling the situation properly they are trying and hopefully it will help.

He didn't say the Bush policies were better. Does anyone know what it is called when one distorts the arguments of a debate opponent and then argues against the distorted view?

Of course it is getting worse (economist are predicting a "w" shaped recovery). That is why they are considering another stimulus bill. right? I mean one would not need to stimulate an economy that was doing fine, would one?

We all need to realize that the admin is going to play both sides of this issue. First they up-play the direness of the economy then later when the admin changes they up-play the improvement. But when they want a new stimulus bill they will up-play the problems that can be used to indicate we need the bill.

It is the same with the health care situation. Eighty percent of Americans like their health care and few think it is an important issue. Of the few who do not have insurance they all have health care. the only problem is that costs are rising; some of that rise is legitimate and some of that rise is actually caused by congress. All we really need to do is to reverse the mess that congress caused to begin with.

If this bill gets passed then we need to vote in a new group of people who will reverse it.
