"A Chinese specialist on Russia has delivered a grim forecast for Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine: that it is doomed to fail.

Peking University professor Feng Yujun is also cooling on the future of Beijing-Moscow relations, writing in a recent op-ed in The Economist that the two nations have
diverging visions of the future of global affairs.

Feng's assessment is a departure from the messaging of the Chinese government. Despite claiming to be neutral, Beijing has tacitly supported Moscow's war from the beginning, from opposing the West's retaliatory sanctions to banning criticism of Russia in Chinese social media.

Feng presented four major factors that he believes will "make Russia's eventual defeat inevitable."

No one is going to vote for Biden because China's leaders tell them to.

The original Soviet plan was to change human nature, and create "The New Soviet Man", mostly by education, or if you prefer, indoctrination. This was done by rewarding those who contributed more by making the, "Heroes" and giving them awards and even a better chance of acquiring scarce items. such as refrigerators and automobiles. But corruption made it less effective, and the best rewards tended to go to the sons and daughters of those in the Party bureaucracy.

In China, each individual has a cellphone, and the cellphone provides where he is and what he is doing 24/7, And this makes it easier to reward "good" behavior and to punish "bad" behavior. This, of course would reward those to came to their jobs early and left late and were more productive, and would make it easy to punish those who were often absent or were unproductive.

I think it is pretty clear that Xi's system of rewards and punishments is a much more efficient way than the system used in the USSR or in East Germany, where the Stasi had a huge number of secret police controlling every citizen, largely though punishment. Of course, the secret police produced nothing.

Corruption in China has always been far less than in the USSR, Cuba, Venezuela and other Communist states.

Xi is essentially doing with cellphones what Henry Ford did to his workers with his "Social Department", which could fire workers who were drunks or perhaps not good Christians.

One book that is really worth reading is "Fordlandia" about Ford's failed effort to grow rubber for tires with a city in the Brazilian forest dedicated to the cultivation of rubber and "The American Way of Life".
