That is because the Democratic party has moved so far to the Right that they are much farther to the Right than the Republicans were 70 years ago.
The Republicans back then were much, much more Liberal than they are today. 70 years ago there was actually a real middle class, able to afford homes and cars and not getting in over their heads in debt doing it.

Trump orchestrated, supported and promoted the j6 riots. It was condemned all over the western world as an attempt coup to install himself undemocratically.

Trump was the least authoritarian president in my lifetime.

He did not weaponize law enforcement to attack and oppress and critics like Biden has and Obama did.

He kept us out of idiot unnecessary wars which are the primary excuse for authoritarian policies and attacks on speech.(See Patriotic act.)

He reduced taxes and regulations. What authoritarian would do that?
