Iran: Uranium centrifuge goal reached

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's president claimed Sunday that his country is now running 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium for its controversial nuclear program — a long-sought Iranian goal.

The claim contradicted a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog on Thursday that put the number much lower — at close to 2,000. The report by the International Atomic Energy Agency said enrichment had slowed and Iran was cooperating with its nuclear probe, which could fend off calls for a third round of sanctions.

"The West thought the Iranian nation would give in after just a resolution, but now we have taken another step in the nuclear progress and launched more than 3,000 centrifuge machines, installing a new cascade every week," Ahmadinejad told a group of students in remarks carried by the state television Web site.

Iran previously announced operating 3,000 centrifuges in April, but the IAEA said at the time that Iran had only 328 centrifuges operating at its underground Natanz enrichment facility in central Iran.

In the latest report, drawn up by IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei, the organization put the number of centrifuges enriching uranium in Natanz at close to 2,000 with another 650 being tested.

The 2,000 figure is an increase of a few hundred of the machines over May, when the IAEA last reported on Iran. Still the rate of expansion is much slower than a few months ago, when the country was assembling close to 200 centrifuges every two weeks.

"The recent report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agrees with Iran's approach and the dispute over Iran's nuclear case has ended," Ahmadinejad said. The latest IAEA report noted an increased willingness by the Iranians to answer questions after years of stonewalling.

The U.N, Security Council has so far passed two sets of sanctions targeting Iranian individuals and businesses involved in the country's nuclear and missile programs. The resolutions also ordered countries to stop supplying Iran with materials and technology for these programs.

The latest announcement could spur renewed calls for a third set of sanctions.

U.N. officials have suggested that Iran had slowed its program and increased its cooperation with the agency investigators to avert new sanctions.

Iran's ultimate stated goal for the Natanz facility, the only site now open to full IAEA monitoring, is to run 54,000 centrifuges — enough for dozens of nuclear weapons a year.

Uranium gas, spun in linked centrifuges, can result in either low-enriched fuel suitable to generate power, or the weapons-grade material that forms the fissile core of nuclear warheads.

Iran insists it wants to master the technology only to meet future power needs and argues it is entitled to enrich under a Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty provision giving all pact members the right to develop peaceful programs.

I won't but for the record those three links aren't the same they're different articles

"The GAO report really amounts to asking someone to kick an 80-yard field goal and criticizing them when they came up 20 or 25 yards short," said House GOP leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters he would like to ensure a long-term U.S. presence in the Middle East to fight al-Qaida and deter aggression from Iran.

"And I hope that this reaction to Iraq and the highly politicized nature of dealing with Iraq this year doesn't end up in a situation where we just bring all the troops back home and thereby expose us, once again, to the kind of attacks we've had here in the homeland or on American facilities," said McConnell, R-Ky.

Democrats said the GAO report showed that Bush's decision to send more troops to Iraq was failing because Baghdad was not making the political progress needed to tamp down sectarian violence.

"No matter what spin we may hear in the coming days, this independent assessment is a failing grade for a policy that simply isn't working," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Hey if any republican politicians read this the Taliban in Pakistan is the good people their government is what you would call the evil ones

Why is Iran pursuing the Bomb?

Iran has been backed into a corner. Think about this from Iran's point of view. You are surrounded by the US basically. President Bush declares you as part of the "Axis of Evil" along with Iraq and North Korea and then promptly invades Iraq, establishing a new doctrine of preemption. You logically must assume that you are the next target on the list. The ultimate prevention from any invasion is a nuclear bomb, it makes perfect sense for Iran to pursue this goal.

It also makes perfect sense for Iran to back the insurgency in Iraq. The more the US is tied down in Iraq, the less the chance of any US action against Iran. The rhetoric coming out of Iran about wiping Israel off the map is just that, rhetoric. If you look at the situation in Iran domestically you will understand. In Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is regarded as a failure domestically. He was elected on a populist platform and has failed. As long as he can keep the focus on something internationally and play up to the anti-Israel sentiments the Iranian people will be occupied with other things and ignore their domestic plight.

Also, it is important to note that in the Iranian press he has been criticized. This is very important because the state runs Iranian media.

Options for Iran:
1) Airstrike - This idea is stupid, and will not work. Internally Iran is divided. Airstrikes only unite a country against the aggressor. Also, another huge problem is that airstrikes will not get all the targets, and we do not even know where all of the targets are. Also, it will cause Iran to cause even more problems for US troops in Iraq.

2) Invasion - With the situation in Iraq, this is out of the question. Iran would be ten times harder to get control of than Iraq, and we cannot even get control of Iraq.

3) Sanctions - Without sanctioning oil, these are meaningless. And with Iran giving huge oil deals to China and Russia, it means that any sanctions the US can get through will be meaningless and have no real effect on the country.

In the end, we have very limited options in Iran, and even fewer now that we are bogged down in Iraq. I hope that President Bush does not act to hastily and do something stupid in regards to Iran and the Middle East.

I Don't Trust Israel

I dont trust iran...invade or put major sanctions!
-------------------
Has Iran ever bombed an American communications ship in international water, killing 34 sailors and maiming 172 others? Does Iran constantly send Mossad spies to the United States to steal our top secrets and sell them to our enemies? Are Iranians monopolizing America's banking, educational, legal, news, and entertainment industries for the purpose of spreading pro-Iranian propaganda, and brain-washing the American people? Do Iranians control the narcotics, pornography, gambling, and prostitution rackets in America? One nation does all these things, yet is still our "gallant little ally in the Middle East," Eretz Israel.
