Hayes, could become president rather than the Democrat Samuel Tiden, who won the popular vote. And neither party was in any way christlike.

As the country began splitting up, a great panic started consuming the outgoing Buchanan administration and members of congress. They wanted to keep the union together. They did not want the south to leave. They did not want war. President Buchanan declared secession was a constitutional crisis and then asked Congress to develop a plan to keep the south in the union. He wanted Congress to assure the southern states that slavery would be protected once Lincoln took office. Congress offered over fifty different proposals trying to keep the union together. In the end, congress settled for a proposal by Republican Thomas Corwin. It is called the Corwin Amendment, or more accurately, the slavery amendment.

“No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.

Buchanan was a Federalist, not a republican, and he was closely aligned with democrats, which may explain why he tried to preserve the predominately democrat institution of slavery. Fortunately, Lincoln, with strong backing from abolitionist Christians, won the 1860 election which led to the Emancipation Proclamation just a few years later.

Those Americans who opposed slavery and the Corwin Amendment that was backed by racists and others erroneously thinking compromise with racists was the only way to hold the Union together eventually prevailed as support for Lincoln and abolitionists grew, culminating in the Emancipation Proclamation that even an ill-conceived 1877 compromise could not destroy.
The compromise of 1877 was an unofficial settlement of the dispute between presidential candidates and the resolution or setting aside of the republican accusations of democrat voter fraud in the 1876 election.

Jefferson was ideologically against slavery, but there was no way that he could succeed as a plantation owner without free labor. So he did not free his slaves.

Jefferson's wife, nee Martha Wayles (1748-1782) was the daughter of John Wayles. John Wayles was also the father of Sally Hemings (1773-1835), so she was a half sister to Jefferson's deceased wife. So it is likely that there was some resemblance between Martha and Sally. Sally was a slave owned by Jefferson, and accompanied him on his trip to France, where she was legally free, as slavery was abolished in France. She agreed to return to Virginia as a slave in return for Jefferson's promise that her children (by Jefferson) would be free.

Jefferson was a deist, not a man who sought to please and obey the Creator God.

After slavery ended, there were a series of massacres, bombings, lynchings, and other acts of terror against blacks by whites, so blacks went north. When blacks went north they got the same massacres, bombings, lynchings, and other acts of terror against blacks by whites just lie was done in the south. There were numerus riots by whites against blacks because they moved into communities with whites. So as southern blacks went north, they found that geography was the only difference between a southern white and a northern one. When blacks went north, so did lynchings. The great northern migration resulted in years of rioting by angry whites.

Some whites resorted to terrorism to intimidate blacks so they would not move into white communities. For the first five years after WW2 in Chicago alone, there were over 300 documented acts of terror by whites against blacks who tried living in or near majority-white neighborhoods.64 In 1951, a black man named Harvey Clark and his family tried to move into the Cicero neighborhood of Chicago. A white mob vandalized his home and burned his furniture in the front yard. The police did nothing.

In 1955, there were more than 200 recorded acts of violence against blacks by whites in Philadelphia alone. In 1964, blacks again tried renting an apartment in Cicero, their apartment was vandalized. Police acted this time. They entered the apartment, took out the furniture, and told the people they were evicted. During the same period in Detroit, there were over 200 acts of terror to stop black families from moving to the suburbs. In a fifteen year span from 1950 to 1965, more than one hundred recorded bombings of black-owned homes occurred in Los Angeles. In 1987, another black family tried moving into Cicero. They got gunfire and firebombs. Again, that was in 1987, not 1887.

Consistently since the end of slavery, there has been a section of the white community who violently resisted the efforts of blacks to live successfully in America. During this time, prosperous blacks faced acts of terror while thriving black communities got destroyed by mobs of angry whites who felt they were losing out because blacks had acquired the same things whites had. This kind of terrorism has gone long ignored in understanding the brutality and hardcore resistance to black freedom in America. Forgotten is that blacks worked hard to get what they had, but that did not matter because blacks were always to be lesser than whites, and the caste was to be maintained by any means necessary. White immigrants, whose descendants will say today how they are not responsible because their ancestors did not enslave people, committed violence against blacks. Descendants of white immigrants who were children while those white immigrants were getting benefits from the new deal or the Servicemen's Readjustment Act that blacks were excluded from and then benefitted from the wealth passed down, or the schools that were funded with more money than schools in black neighborhoods, or who lived in neighborhoods with street lights, paved streets and sidewalks, are saying they aren't to be held responsible even though they have benefitted from those things. Of course, all of you will say you never benefitted from such things, but you're lying.
