In 1964 Johnson was president and kennedy to follow, three civil rights working for killed in Mississippi murdered by the Ku Klux Klan and members of the Sheriff's Department two were young Jewish boys one was a young black boy.
In the movie Mississippi Burning which was an excellent movie by the way they showed how they found where the boys were buried by using a black FBI agent to kidnap and threaten one of the clan members This is not how it happened.
The government and the FBI couldn't crack the the clan. They had a good ideas about what happened .Also American Indian had found the car they were in.
Hundreds of FBI and others were there searching and investigating .
In the end they asked a old friend for help.
They turned to the Mafia as our leaders had in the past.

They got what was arguably one of the most feared gangsters there was at the time.
The Grim Reaper Greg Scarpa.
He kidnapped a clan member they believed was involved . he owned a store Greg got a TV and asked him to help load it.
He took the guy to a abandoned home and went to work on him as he had extensive experience getting information out of people that didn't want to talk.
Seem our government has worked with them many times.
Were they in the right to?
Guess its a matter of opinion

Extracting information from murderers by torture might be OK in certain situations, as the US Armed Forces did to obtain info to thwart another planned mass murder event.
