Vance's family was from Appalachia, he grew up in Middleton, Ohio, which is not really a Appalachia. Vance's family migrated from some hick holler in Kentucky in the 1940's.

The main point is that in his book, Vance blamed his family for their dysfunctional lifestyle. His mother was educated, and a registered nurse, who was unfortunately addicted to painkillers, and had over a dozen boyfriends and husbands.

Walz did everything hat was required of him in the military. There is no "stolen valor" involved. I think that a decision to avoid service in Iraq was totally a wise choice. It was a doomed and dangerous mission that proved to be counterproductive, based on deliberately false propaganda of Cheney and Juniorbush.

The US gained nothing by invading Iraq. An intelligent man would have been able to have seen that.
