Marxists are not opposed to prosperity. Observe that the main accomplishment of the Chinese Communist Party since about 1985 or so has been the HUGE increase in the salary of the average citizen. In 1980, China had an economy smaller than Italy, and today China is the second largest economy on the planet. Capitalism is NOT a political system, it is simply a tool that allows a large number of individuals to pool their money together to form a company in which the liability of each investor is limited to the amount that investor invest. Capitalism was not created by God, by the way. It is an IMPERFECT system in that unless it it regulated, it tends to allow the most wealthy investors to create monopolies and to amass fortunes that no one could possibly need, while forcing those that cannot participate due to lack of funds to suffer poverty. And of course, modern social democrats have created much more egalitarian societies in which nearly everyone gets the food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and education they need to live long and better lives.

The Communist Party of China has created more prosperity for its people between 1985 and the present than any government in history. China was devastated by the War with Japan from 1931 to 1945 and the revolution that followed, and then devasted even more by Mao's unwise decisions, particularly the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. But in the 1980's, the leaders abandoned Mao's incompetent decisions and began using capitalism as a tool to develop the nation, and the economy rose from lower than that of Italy to second on the planet.

China's leaders learned from Mao's mistakes, but they kept him on all the banknotes and on portraits hanging everywhere. Mao's ideology was defective, but Mao still represents the end of China's domination by Japan and European countries and the US.

Power can breed corruption. Cuba and North Korea are prime examples of allegedly Marxist regimes that have failed at improving the economies of those countries. But they are not the absolute worst countries, Myanmar, Somalia, Guinea Bissau and Haiti are all worse and are less Marxist.
