Why no damage reports from Dominican Republic, next to Haiti?

We are hearing horrible damage reports from various cities in Haiti, after the earthquake. The capital, Port-au-Prince, is said to be almost completely destroyed, with literally hundreds of thousands of people killed.

But I am curious: Haiti is half of an island in the Caribbean, near Cuba. The other half of the island is a country called Dominican Republic. Some of its cities are only 20 miles from Port-au-Prince.

Why are we hearing NO reports of damage, deaths etc. from the Dominican Republic?

I thought that odd as well but I guess 20 miles is a long ways away in earthquake terms. That does not seem so odd thinking back n SanFran and LA a few years back.

Because the quake was extremely shallow in geologic terms and localized right near Port-au-Prince.

When you build multi-story buildings with unreinforced concrete the result is massive death near the epicenter of an earthquake this size. It is extremely unfortunate. And as the days roll on they predict the usual unrest in Haita will be exacerbated to the point where many more will die. I hope this prediction is wrong.

The day it happened I got a sick headache at exactly the moment it struck. I just happened to be thinking about the quake in Cali and then I was struck very ill and the distinct impression was that I KNEW there was going to be a devastating aftershock from that earthquake that day, but that somehow the people there would not be affected. I thought it was bizarre. Little did I know that it would strike thousands of miles away. I wonder if there is something to this? About an hour afterwards the headache went completely away and then I turned on the news... The haitian-headache will not go away for many years I'm afraid..

jeez louise... I would not have believed you could even build multi storied buildings without it. I used to be in the concrete inspection biz.

its amazing what you can do with no money and no building standards or regulations...

I find it hard to believe people can even live there, with the amount of Disasters that hit it from year to year. Its almost a catch 22 where they can't build up the buildings to take disasters like hurricanes because they have no money, and they have no money because the nation gets ripped apart every few years

Maybe you needed to go donate your special credentials/forte to those overly strapped humans that build home/lean-to from what ever building material that they have access to...like loads of reclaimed demolition from the neighborhood dump site!

Not like there are any Builders Square/Home Depot/Sutherland's just around the corner on that Island...and inspectors; HA-HA, WTH is a UBC;)

But SERIOUSLY...they probably could have used your expertise and will most assuredly need it in the coming months!

Honey bun, Why don't you volunteer for duty in Haiti? I am certain all the love you would spread would really help fix things up.

I've done my time with volunteering around this world...but thank you for thinking that I could go 'MAN-UP' and do it all again;)

I sure the hell would. But I was speaking to Dogtown and I was being serious...they'll need that type of UBC knowledgeable person to help them put things right with what they have to work with and it ain't the best but it's all they have sooo
Plant one right here...big boy

saw some news coverage and there was rebar in the concrete.
as I said I did not think it would reamain up right without it.

where are they going to go ? no skills, no money. if they could play baseball they would already have walked over to the DR and had their chance.

Odd...What I heard the President of Haiti say "I'm staying right here to be with my people", he was offered the opportunity to be air lifted out...so in your mind you've classified him as a DICTATOR...hmmm

CNN said they felt it over on the Dominican Republic side of the island but it wasn't strong enough over there to cause damage.

From what I hear it wasn't even that bad all over Haiti... mainly just Port-au-Prince because that's where most all the tall unreinforced concrete buildings are.

Interesting sidebar: One of the other Property Managers from my office just got back from a vacation at an all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic about 6 or 7 weeks ago. He loved it but he's real glad he's not there right now.

LOOK, Haiti , is a disaster and has been a disaster since day one. The population is ignorant , unable to care for themselves and are just an advanced BLUE STATE outside the United States.
Politicans have raped Haiti forever. The taxpayers of the UNITED STATES have poured billions of dollars into this cesspool over the years. Our money has been stolen, not used to assist the people in becoming self efficient , but instead stolen by corrupt politicians and their friends.
Obama has wrapped his arms around Haiti and will use it as a way to divert his failure here in America. Only as long as Haiti serves Obamas' purposes will he waste time there. Do I have a solution for Haiti, NO!! BUT if there is one it must begin with HAITI having a HONEST , Democratic form of Government . Obama will not do this , he will seek a Marxist type Haiti, with policies designed like his current agenda for us. Now, our first goal must be to get the entire WORLD sharing its WEALTH and its SKILLS in rebuilding HAITI so its people can become something more than an extended Obama type welfare line. It will take BILLIONS and YEARS to do so, THE ENTIRE WORLD MUST HELP , not just AMERICA!! AMERICA has its own disaster , "OBAMAISM" to fight before we can afford the reponsibility of feeding , caring , and nursing an entire nation of helpless victims ,not just of an earthquake but the years of trying to survive under "liberalism".
