WASHINGTON — Federal officials say they are investigating the safety of lithium-ion battery in General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt after a second battery fire following crash-testing of the electric car.



The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that three Volt battery packs were crash-tested last week. In one instance, the battery caught fire afterward, and in another the battery emitted smoke and sparks.



Last May, a fire erupted in the battery of a Chevy Volt that had been damaged during a government crash test three weeks earlier. Last week's tests were an attempt to replicate the May fire.



NHTSA has opened a formal safety defect investigation of the batteries.
General Motors officials said previously that government officials didn't follow the carmaker's protocols for storing post-crash batteries.

I guess you're supposed to store the deadly batteries in a vacume sealed environment forever.

I have to question whether burnt lithium ions are good for the earth.
The problem with Chevy Volts is the government subsidies specific to it. If its a good thing then it will represent the better mousetrap. Right now its just crony capitalism at it's worst.

I'm not sure it's really capitalism at all.

If electric cars are practical, then the private sector will soon be selling them. If they aren't, then they should stay in research and development until they are practical.

Right now, I wouldn't buy one.

There are No Jobs available for teens and college is too expensive to afford. Newt Gingrich would increase the pay for the military so if you want to make money earn a living your best opiton is to become a soldier. Recruitment could be highest since WWII. When our companies start producing Tanks,Guns,Fighter and bomber planes to take the rest of the garbage out in the middle east the brighter our economic future would become like lower gas prices again no more long lines. I hope Newt does become President of the United States he would bring real change and better economy.
