Countries that have the death penalty

The state administered death penalty derives its authority from the duty of state to deliver justice. Each crime is deserving of a particular penalty. Lesser crimes a lesser penalty and worse crimes a worse penalty. Is there room for mercy which is by definition to give a penalty that is less than the crime deserves? Yes but in each case of mercy too little punishment is given. Is it better to give too little punishment rather than too much? If recompense means a person pays back what he has stolen then the punishment fits the crime because there is parity between the amount stolen and the amount paid back. Extending that logic an eye for an eye a life for a life. That is a timeless principle that most of the world accepts. To punish the life taker with a sentence any less than his own life is mercy and is also a diminishment of justice. The crime deserves death and anything less is not justice. I fully back the concept that certain crimes are deserving of death. It is both logical and god given. It is also true that the state has the authority to rightly administer the death penalty. If that state is however not delivering it rightly then it loses its authority to give that sentence. If the state chooses to be merciful and can do so without sacrificing justice that is a good path. This is a grave power to give to the state especially considering that overy state ever to have existed on the planet has abused it s various powers at one time or another. There must be checks, balances, and especially limits on that power. If the state is to have the authority to give the death penalty then it must be a state of limited power. If the state does not have the authority to give the death sentence then it is by definition a state of limited power. Anyone who is against the death penalty even if only in certain circumstances is making the claim that states must be limited in their powers. We may disagree just how limited that state must be but at least we have begun with some common ground.

I propose to you all that all states abuse all power eventually and all states must have limits placed on them balanced against the powers that are given to it. Those limits must be across the board and applied to every power. A constitution is the best way to codify those limits. The united states has been overstepping its powers for a long time now in so many ways it would be hard to calculate. The death penalty is the least of our worries but should the state ever get out of control as so many others have done before you can count on the fact that innocent people will be killed.

Why have many in power and many run of the mill leftists like Dawkinrocks failed to condemn this?

Has the United Nations condemned this? Has Obama? Have any of the leaders of the EU?

Yet, if America executes a heinous murderer many Leftists condemn it.

The hypocrisy of this is beyond words. But it might prove their hatred of the West and their love of totalitarianism.

Welcome to the sick mind of a Leftist.

And, you are absolutely right, it clearly proves their hatred of the West and their love of totalitarianism. This is not about their concenn for humanity by any means, it never has been. It is about their HATE! It always is with sick leftist!

You may be right but your argument is unconvincing. It is natural for people to be concerned more with what is in their own backyard. Being concerned about a policy in the States while ignoring one in another country could be attributed either to one explanation or the other.

Dawkinrocks is a Limey. As you well know, many non-American leftists love to condemn America for it's ills, but overlook the much worse actions of left wing tyrants. It has been going on a long time....remember Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini were admired by the Left.

And do you deny that much of the criticisms by the UN and other leftist organizations and spokes mouths are NOT targeted at totalitarian regimes, but at western nations? In fact, many leftists still commend tyrants.

Bizarre

I am clearly an opponent of the death penalty

I condemn it everywhere

But it is good to see that the US is in good company with N Korea

Same principles, different numbers

I am still dismayed that you value the right to life so preciously and are on the left while leftist policy in general subverts all other rights eventually leading to a subversion of the right to life as well.

"Same principles, different numbers."

The principle is of course the principle that the state has the authority to deny individual rights. If you are going to make your case on principle and you are going to claim that one cannot merely have a difference of degree than you must advocate individual rights over state power at all times, 100% or be a hypocrite. Once you give in that the state has the right to deny someone some right then it is only a matter of degree when the state denies more and more rights which is the nature of state.

Like many leftists, he is confused. He thinks bigger more controlling government is the answer, when anyone with a functioning brain knows it is exactly the wrong answer.

It is sad that some many think big centralized government is a force for good. They have been brainwashed by the state.

George Washington said it well with this...
Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

It is so true that anyone with a functional brain knows big government is not the answer. But, leftist have never been accused of having a functional brain.

The death penalty always results in the state murdering people ie executing them for crimes they did not commit

If you support that you are either vicious or mentally ill or both

But then most supporters of capital punishment are also happy to see their country bomb the shit out of other countries and assault rifles available to anyone in the shops

Both of which result in mass killing

Then they bang on about the sanctity of life and the love of Jesus without any understanding of the ludicrously hypocritical position they represent

You point out the hypocrisy of Christians on the death penalty, but fail to see the hypocrisy in your beliefs. As the Doctor tried to point out to you, your position on the death penalty contradicts your love of big centralized socialistic government.

You believe government should not implement capital punishment because it is likely to make a mistake, but you want government to do everything else. If government is incapable of using the death penalty correctly, then how can government be expected to do everything else well?

Umm, yep. You got that right. So take away the guns and they will use knives. Take away the nooses and they will use economics. Governments kill people not laws.

That being said if you were t argue that big governments need to be limited and limited the use of the death penalty was a step in the right direction I could get behind that. But do you believe that government needs to be limited or do you want to see most of its powers expand?

You point out the hypocrisy of Christians on the death penalty,

Did I miss a bit about Christians and hypocricy? Well there is no doubt we are. But god has always said that the wages of sin is death, that governments are created to carry out justice and have the authority to execute. - no hypocrisy there.

I can understand the aversion to the death penalty on moral grounds and also the possibility of executing the innocent. Our Limey friend is under the misconception that the US government executes innocents regularly. Of course, this is left wing propaganda. The likelihood of this occurring is extremely small since those on death row are often there for decades before finally being executed. These executions usually end the life of a criminal who is without doubt, responsible for heinous murder(s).

Our Limey friend points out the hypocrisy of Christians who demand the death penalty. But he fails to see the hypocrisy in his own beliefs. He has total faith in the State for all things, except for the State's right to execute the guilty, because they might execute an innocent person. How can one have such unwavering faith in the State, if it is incapable of determining who is deserving of the death penalty?
