LOL! California a red state?

Do you know that Reagan signed into law the biggest tax increase in California's history?
Yes ... California was a Red State for decades and decades before Reagan signed amnesty in 1986. It took about a decade after that for California to become the Blue one party socialist state that it is today.

What was the name of that bill you are referring to about Reagan's tax increase in California?

Not amnesty, that was another issue altogether. I'm referring to when he was governor of California.

Check out Reagan's Forgotten Tax Record

“No amount of budget reductions, even if they had been politically palatable, could have balanced California’s budget in 1967. The cornerstone of Governor Reagan’s economic program was not the ballyhooed budget reductions but a sweeping tax package four times larger than the previous record California tax increase obtained by Governor Brown in 1959. Reagan’s proposal had the distinction of being the largest tax hike ever proposed by any governor in the history of the United States.”[1]

Brown was a Democrat, btw. I don't remember this state ever having been very conservative, and I've lived here a long time.

Nevertheless, we have had Republican governors, like Reagan, for example, and, more recently Shwarznegger.

I don't find capitalgainsandgames.com to be a credible website. It's a blog ... an editorial if you will .... someone's (who the hell knows) opinion!

If you would like to discuss California politics ... I would like to know the name of the bill you are referring to.

And, I am sorry you don't recall California being a state that supported Conservative candidates and values. California was a Red State for decades before Reagan passed amnesty in 1986.

Other than in the 1964 LBJ landslide win over Goldwater, Californians supported a Republican for President every cycle from 1952 through 1988.

Odd you bring ip amnesty followed by lefty governors. Not exactly Regan's finest hour.
Regan had goid ideas but his execution left much to be desired.

Browns dad was governor like forever. Jerry is on his third term. But Calif. has had some Republican Gov's. My favorite was Wilson.

Oh... and not only did Reagan hail from Calif., so did Nixon..... I know, I know.

That's right, we gave the nation Richard Nixon as well.

California does have a history of electing Republicans, that's a fact. The latest, as I said, was governor Shwartznegger. Ahnold, if you prefer.

As for Reagan and his signing into law the biggest tax increase in the state's history, I'm not sure just what the bill number may have been. If the blog and my memory isn't good enough, I'll see what else I can find.

Actually, I thought everyone knew about the tax bill.c

update: here's what Reagan had to say back in '67 in support of the tax increase that was, up to that time, the biggest tax increase passed in any state.

Maybe Im renembering wrong but wasnt Reagan a dem at some point ? Had a change of heart maybe ?

In his early years, he was a Democrat. It may have been Nancy that turned him from the dark side:

Reagan began his political career as a Democrat and, in December 1945, was only prevented from leading an anti-nuclear rally in Hollywood by pressure from the Warner Bros. studio. He would later make his crusade against nuclear weapons a key point of his Presidency, building on previous efforts to limit the spread of nuclear weapons to a new focus to reduce the numbers and types of them.[60] However, in the early 1950s, as his relationship with Republican actress Nancy Davis grew,[61][62] he shifted to the right and, while remaining a Democrat, endorsed the presidential candidacies of Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956 as well as Richard Nixon in 1960.[63] The last time Reagan actively supported a Democratic candidate was in 1950 when he helped Helen Gahagan Douglas in her unsuccessful Senate campaign against Richard Nixon.

Who knows, maybe had he stayed married to Jane Wyman, he might have become a Democrat president and pushed for liberal policies.

He was also a union president at one time.

Considering Jane Wyman said herself that her marriage break-up with Reagan was partly because of political differences and considering Reagan's staunch conservative values .... I doubt very seriously Reagan would have ever supported the democrats marxist ideologies!

Reagan understood marxism and communism and despised everything about it!

"How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin."
