OTTAWA — Years of corporate tax cuts have succeeded in making Canada one of the lowest tax countries for doing business, a new study says.

International accounting firm KPMG says its comparison of 10 countries found Canada with the third lowest business taxes, behind Mexico and the Netherlands, but ahead of its main trading partner, the U.S.

I would have never guessed they were business friendly. Who do they soak for the money to pay for the national health care? The people? Someone is paying for it, I always assumed it was business

Ontario charges a tax on income for the health system. These amounts are collected through the income tax system, and do not determine eligibility for public health care. The Ontario Health Premium is an additional amount charged on an individual's income tax that ranges from $300 for people with $20,000 of taxable income to $900 for high income earners. Individuals with less than $20,000 in taxable income are exempt.

Quebec also requires residents to obtain prescription insurance. When an individual does not have insurance, they must pay an income-derived premium. As these are income related, they are considered to be a tax on income under the law in Canada.

Other provinces, such as British Columbia and Alberta, charge premiums collected outside of the tax system for the provincial medicare systems. These are usually reduced or eliminated for low-income people.

US corporate taxes are high compared to other countries, and should have been done away with completely, but there's only so much you can expect when a conservative gets elected only every 60 years. Obama, of course, with Jimmy Carter advisors on his economics team (!) promises to raise corporate taxes, income taxes, and capital gains taxes.
