"Ernie Kovacs started on television in 1950 on Philadelphia's local NBC affiliate, WPTZ-TV. During his two years there, he perfected his craft by starring in programs such as "Deadline for Dinner" (which he dubbed, "Dead Lion for Dinner"), "Pick Your Ideal," "Three to Get Ready," "Time for Ernie," "Now You're Cooking," "Ernie in Kovacsland" and "Kovacs on the Corner." From these early TV shows, Ernie developed his unique style and understanding of the powerful new medium of television. During this period one critic described his on-air personality as: "...very much like a tightrope walker performing without a net."
