2. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
STIs are common in Amsterdam and can be curable or manageable with treatment. Examples include:

  • Chlamydia – often asymptomatic; can cause pain when urinating or discharge
  • Gonorrhoea – may cause pus-like discharge and swollen testicles in men
  • Syphilis – progresses through stages from painless sores to severe organ damage
  • Herpes (HSV) – painful blisters or sores that can recur
  • HIV – attacks the immune system; early symptoms may resemble flu
  • HPV – can cause genital warts or increase cancer risk
  • Hepatitis B – liver infection from the virus
