NBC News, the Obama shill service, breathlessly announced "another" Palin scandal!!!!!!! You know how Palin said she got rid of the governor's private jet as an extravagance when she became governor and sold it on ebay?

Well, she didn't pull the wool over NBC's eyes! :p It turns out that she tried to sell it on ebay, it didn't sell, so an aircraft broker sold it!!!!!!

She sold it for 600,000 less than the new price as well. Who knew you could not sell a used jet for the price of a new one.

Waaaaaaaaaait a minute there pal.............. I'll bet she used the missing $600,000 to fund creationism classes! :)

Ah the jet. The most overblown piece of aviation history since the Spruce Goose. You know what is funny, is that if any other Governor besides Murkowski would have wanted it, it would have been done. But he had to go about it the way he did and put a real nasty taste into Alaskans mouth over it. There was a time when Alaskans were encouraging her to keep the jet.

The issue over the whole thing is the Murkowski backlash which she capitalized on very successfully. She is the ultimate poppulist here. The real issue with the jet is not its extravagence. The jet in question a IAI Westwind II. Which is about as undignified jet as could be had, and it didnt have the range or rough field capability necessary to make it feasible in Alaska.

An Executive use jet is still being discussed, look for Palin to lease one shortly after defeat in November.

The news said the state had to pay $60,000.00 a year for the payment plus insurance and when they wanted to use it the price of a someone to drive it exc. the cost was more than reasonable.

what is wrong with flying in an airplane with regular folk? I know Obama wont do it but what is really all that wrong with it?

Well it is slightly more complicated than what you describe. The issue of the jet comes from the previous Governor Murkowski as was mentioned before. He wanted a jet, and asked the Legislature to appropriate money for it. They balked and he went ahead anyways finding another pot of money outside of the normal channels. It was very unpopular among Alaskans.

As for the operations and associated costs, it is generally inconsequential. Since 2002, the State of Alaska has not exactly been hurting for money. Former Governors dating back to statehood have generally flown commercial flights when available, flew thier own plane or used the state owned King Air 350 (twin prop). Which Sarah still uses when necessary. But one must understand the nature of travel in Alaska.

There are very few highways here, and most of the communities here are not connected by roads and the distances between them is often great, plus commercial traffic is generally funneled through Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, or Ketchikan. So lets assume the Governor is in Juneau and needs to travel to Homer. There is no direct flights, and the associated travel time and expenses make it often time more reasonable to fly on the KA350 direct. The issue with the jet is that while the KA350 can travel to the small gravel runwayed communities, the jet could not. Also, the Alaska State Troopers have a flight crew capable of piloting that plane. Whereas they needed to hire additional pilots and maintenance crews when it came to the jet, that were outside of the AST.

Personally, I think the whole jet debacle is being blown way out of proportion and much like the "Thanks, but no thanks" stance on the Gravina Island crossing, it is not entirely forth coming in the real world.

One question: is alaska part of the US?

Depends on who you ask. If you Alaskans, yes we are very much a part of the US.
If you ask DC politicians, Alaska is to be seen and not heard, and only when it is convenient for them.

well if your are the Gov of a state, you know you may have more security issues that way, and also going and buying ticket evry time for all the people that need to go, adds up. A private Jet makes more sense long term, and for the needs of a Gov. More so when you look at its Alaska, its not like you want to drive all over it with ease.

Very true, the only problem is that Murkowski went and bought a "corporate" bird that needs long, straight, and damned near pristine runways, and in Alaska you need something that can handle remote dirt strips (or a sea plane!). Fact of the matter is that he was going for "image", and it cost him....HUGE!

If you ask ANYONE (except the morons inside the beltway) Alaska is most certainly a State, and a very vital one!
