Iran shot down US spy plane, military source says

The Iranian army shot down an unmanned US reconnaissance plane over the east of Iran, a local military source was quoted as saying Sunday.

According to the unnamed senior official cited by government-owned Press TV, an American-built RQ-170 Sentinel drone crossed into Iranian airspace from Afghanistan.

If they're telling the truth, which seems quite plausible, then they have a piece of American technology to copy.

could be depending on how hard it hit or how many pieces it was rendered into. and, of course, their ability to comprehend it. wonder how much tech there is in a drone ? might be able to learn how its operated remotely which could make it easier to jam. we have lost several drones (that we know of) though.

Well, they said:

The Iranian army's electronic warfare unit shot the aircraft down "with minimum damage," the source claimed

but, we'll see. I'm not ready to take at face value anything that the Iranian state run media says.

This story does bear watching, though. Sooner or later, some of those drones are likely to fall into enemy hands, and be copied for their own purposes.

clearly they will wish to make it look like a feat. we also will typically have devices that alow us to destroy things we don't want to have examined or that have gone haywire, especially unmanned ones.

I read one report that indicated it was basically "hacked" and taken over by the Iranian military -- which falls more in line with the recent missing drone report in western Afghanistan.

This is a serious problem though, as there have been confirmed reports of insurgents etc hacking into drone feeds etc.

Of course if this is true or not, we shall see -- Iran also claimed to have downed a drone in July -- and offered no proof.

This story does bear watching, though. Sooner or later, some of those drones are likely to fall into enemy hands, and be copied for their own purposes.

Indeed -- However it is claimed that the RQ-170 does not use the most sophisticated equipment as it is a single engine drone and more likely to have problems like this.

Iran already claims to have drones -- but to date they have seemingly shown incapable of conducting missions with them -- if they even exist.

Iran reports US spy drone shot down

US officials said Monday they were unsure whether the Iranian military shot down a US spy drone that went missing Sunday, but confirmed a drone was missing.

The admission came a day after Iran claimed it shot down an American unarmed reconnaissance aircraft over eastern Iran.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force have also confirmed a drone is missing, but said the missing craft was flying a mission over western Afghanistan when operators lost control.

The crew operating the unmanned drone reported a loss of flight control just before the drone went down, according to a US official with knowledge of the incident.

The craft allegedly captured by Iran's military was described on state television as an RQ-170 Sentinel, the same type of drone that NATO claims went missing over Western Afghanistan.

The US has long maintained that US spy drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles are not being deployed in Iranian airspace, but if the drone was in fact shot by Iran, such claims may be called into question.

Developed for the US Air Force, the RQ-170 Sentinel is a stealth drone that helps the US military provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

It is unknown whether it was the US military or the US intelligence community operating the drone at the time of the incident over Iran.

Because 2 Secret drones been shot down in middle east in past 2 years. This is all on Obamas watch. Any other republican president would keep those Drones secret. Bush didnt want to use it cause he knew the consequences of using it. Samething during FDR days. FDR didnt want to use that Atomic Bomb during the war cause he knew the consequences of using it. Now because of Liberal Harry Truman the Russians have it,Chinese have it,Pakistan has it India has it and more countries have the bomb. This is why we should go back to the old days of Thomas Jefferson where Women didnt have a voice,,Blacks nor Indians didnt have a voice. They only way you can vote is to own land. Now we have so many stupid people voting is why we have a stupid president and a Clown Congress and a Circus Senate. Now becausae Obama wanted Drones used as the result of that IRAN might make one to spy on Israel and the west. Please CHANGE VOTING LAWS!!! Lets Take the stupidity out of Washington.
