"With Mark Carney retaining his role as Canada’s prime minister, the Cannabis Council of Canada is calling on the Liberal government to implement policy changes to ensure the country’s marijuana industry continues to grow.
.
Carney, a former central banker, initially was sworn in March 9 to replace Justin Trudeau, a cannabis proponent who resigned as prime minister on Jan. 6.
.
Since
Canada legalized recreational cannabis, the industry has contributed more than $43 Billion to the national gross domestic product, including about $7.4 Billion in 2024, the CCC noted in its release."

"Cannabis smoking poses fewer pulmonary risks than tobacco smoking and it is not positively associated with the development of emphysema, according to medical imaging data published in the journal Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology.
.
Harvard Medical School researchers compared
chest CT scans of 285 subjects. Eighty-nine participants were non-smokers, 97 smoked tobacco, and 99 smoked marijuana.
.
Participants who
smoked tobacco exhibited greater damage to their hearts and lungs than did those who exclusively smoked marijuana. Specifically, tobacco smokers were far more likely to demonstrate moderate to severe coronary artery calcification and suffer from emphysema."

Clearing the Smoke: Workplace Safety Issues Clouded by Medical Marijuana

Phillip B. Russell

Before we try to clear the smoke on the issue of medical marijuana, we should first put the subject in its proper context. Regardless of the strength of the arguments in favor of or against medical marijuana usage, its use in the workplace is primarily a safety issue. Prudent construction employers have always made safety a priority, and they now have a new safety threat: the expanding use of medical marijuana and the expanding cultural expectation that employees should be allowed to light up any time because of health issues.

"House Democrats have passed legislation, HB 1200, permitting marijuana sales in state-operated stores regulated by the Liquor Control Board. The bill passed by a vote of 102 to 101, with all House Democrats voting for the bill and all House Republicans voting against it.
.
The measure now awaits action from the Republican-led Senate, where leaders have said that they will not consider it without significant amendments. Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, who supports adult-use legalization, has similarly acknowledged that “bipartisan compromises” are necessary in order to move the bill forward.
.
At issue are provisions in the bill mandating that adult-use cannabis products be sold only in state-owned and operated retail stores, like how liquor and wine is sold in Pennsylvania. Under this model, private businesses would not be permitted to engage in adult-use marijuana sales.
.
A supermajority of Pennsylvanians, including majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans, support allowing the sale of adult-use cannabis in Pennsylvania,” according to recent polling."
.

"Legislators on the General Affairs Committee amended and passed legislation, LB 677, regulating the distribution of medical cannabis to authorized patients. Over 70 percent of Nebraskans approved a pair of citizen initiatives in November, legalizing the use and dispensing of cannabis to those with a physicians recommendation.
.

Changes to LB 677, which had previously stalled in the Committee, include prohibiting patients from smoking botanical cannabis and imposing a limited list of qualifying conditions. Neither restrictions exist in the voter-approved ballot measures. As amended, LB 677 also reduces the amount of cannabis patients may possess from five ounces to no more than two ounces. Lawmakers also added new rules narrowly defining which healthcare practitioners can issue medical cannabis authorizations and under what circumstances.
.
Following the passage of the initiatives, the state’s Attorney General filed a lawsuit seeking to nullify the election results. Although a district court judge rejected the suit, the AG is appealing the ruling to the state’s Supreme Court."

.

"Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who consume cannabis are less likely to die while hospitalized and they incur fewer hospital-related expenses as compared to non-users, according to data published in the journal Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings.
.
Researchers affiliated with St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City assessed the relationship between cannabis use and inpatient outcomes in a cohort of more than 3.3 million RA patients over five years.
.
After adjusting for age, gender, race, and comorbidities, cannabis use at the time of hospitalization was linked to decreased mortality (odds ratio [OR]: 0.50), depression (OR: 0.47), chronic pain (OR: 0.45), and anxiety (OR: 0.55). Cannabis consumers also incurred nearly 10 percent fewer hospital-related charges per visit."

Florida: Governor Signs Law Making It Harder To Place Ballot Initiatives Before Voters
May 9, 2025
.
"Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed legislation into law making it more difficult for entities to place ballot initiatives before Florida’s voters.
.
The law, which is already being legally
challenged as unconstitutional, imposes significant new hurdles for those seeking to place initiatives on the state ballot. Specifically, it mandates that campaign supporters post a $1 Million bond before commencing signature gathering; it prohibits the use of out-of-state canvassers, and it narrows the window during which signatures must be submitted to election officials from 30 days to 10, among other changes.
.

Florida law already requires ballot initiatives to pass by a vote of 60 percent rather than by a simple majority. No other state imposes that requirement.
.
Passage of the
new law comes just months after the defeat of Amendment 3, which sought to regulate the adult-use cannabis market. Fifty-six percent of Floridians voted for the amendment, which was publicly opposed by Gov. DeSantis. During the campaign, Gov. DeSantis funneled millions of dollars in state funds to air anti-marijuana ads on television.
.
Under the
new law, tax dollars can no longer be spent by elected officials to oppose amendment campaigns.
.

Lawmakers in other states are also seeking to make it more difficult for voters to decide on marijuana-related ballot initiatives."
.

"The total U.S. economic impact of regulated marijuana sales could top $123.6 Billion in 2025, about 9% more than last year, according to a newly released MJBiz Factbook update.
.
While the overall industry continues to struggle – especially in some Western states – expanding markets such as New York and Ohio will add stability going into 2025.
.
With more new cannabis markets on the horizon, the industry will add upward of $200 Billion in additional spending to the U.S. economy by 2030.
.
Direct medical and recreational marijuana sales are estimated to reach $35.3 Billion in 2025 with an additional $88.3 billion added to the broader economy."
