One of the greatest drivers of poverty in the United States is the breakdown of marriage. Eighty percent of all long-term poverty occurs in single-parent homes, over 70 percent of poor families are headed by a single parent, and children in single-parent families are approximately five times more likely to be poor than their peers from married-parent homes.

The connection between marriage and poverty is becoming increasingly problematic as the rate of unwed childbearing continues its upward climb. Today, more than 40 percent of U.S. babies are born to single mothers, whereas in the 1960s the rate was less than 10 percent.

The majority of these single mothers are those with a high school education or less—those who will face the most challenges providing for a child on their own. On the other hand, having a child outside of marriage is, by comparison, a relatively rare occurrence among college-educated women.

As Boortz correctly and tragically points out:

You should know that one of the most admirable traits of black society in this country prior to Lyndon Johnson was their incredible dedication to family. The Great Society destroyed that. Yet blacks remain completely loyal to Democrats --- the very party responsible for the destruction of their family values.

It was heart rending to watch this unfold here in Richmond and the real toll is becoming complete now.

It was heart rending to watch this unfold here in Richmond and the real toll is becoming complete now.

Yes it is tragic and yet, those responsible for this terrible tragedy continue causing great harm without consequence.

The War On Poverty has cost the American people more than any other governmental program. And yet, we have more poverty now than in 1965. You would think in a sane nation we would change course, but no...and all thanks to a certain political group.

The poor in America are overwhelmingly having children out of wedlock. Many also fail to graduate high school resulting in a life on the dole or working job to job...all low wage menial jobs. No one dares tell them they are doing wrong, but they will be told that American is unfair, intolerant, and the productive should support them. And, who do they vote for???

Our culture has been infected with a terrible disease and we all know the cause, but still nothing is done.
