this law upon further examination seems aimed at interaction between vehicles and people texting or other activities that prevent them from being aware of their surroundings.

The Texting "ban" they are trying to pass here in Ohio is designed as a "secondary" offense, meaning that you have to be pulled over and/or be ticketed for a primary offense before a citation for texting can be issued. So if this law passes, it will not be illegal to text while driving but you can be cited for texting while driving IF you break some other law in the process. While such laws are sold to the public as an effort to keep the roads safe, in reality such laws are nothing more than PR stunts with the added bonus of revenue enhancement.

the one in Jersey has you getting nailed for jaywalking and if you were texting so much the worse, its not on the driver. it does benefit the driver should he hit someone as that pedestrian was not practicing reasonable care. it might just keep you out of jail.

the ohio one is pretty lame but likely all they could get passed. I think VA may have had one as secondary but upgraded it this year.

except that they will reduce their salary and get compensated in different ways that are not taxed. they already do this, they'll just do it more. raising taxes only works on the middle class. the lower class doesn't pay tax.

Im Republican ok,,, I want the spending limited. I want Taxes cut for people making under $100,000 a year. Pe0ple who have a lot of money dont rely on the police protecting them. They have their own security. Look at Jay Leno,,Hes a millonare and he has his own security. So does Bill OReily he has his own security guys around him. You know what a slippery slope is... Why are you not concerned that laws intentionally written with subjective language will continue to slide down the slope at the expense of our liberty? If I'm not practicing "reasonable" care, then I'm the one who gets hurt as a result, and if that's the case, what business is it of anyone else? Should I damage another individual's person or property as a result of not practicing "reasonable" care, then there are already laws to hold me accountable for my actions.

I paid 11% so poor Mitt for getting nailed. Hardly a free ride. Only lower classes pay all the marginal tax rate due to deductions. Ask Obama why he's OK with that.

The rich people do get a free ride but it is not in the tax rate. The gov pretends to hit them harder with a higher rate but then gives them all sorts of privilege that the rest of us do not even have the opportunity to get. The rich come out ahead when the tax rate goes up. We need a system that taxes everybody at the same rate and also gives everybody equal access to the same privilege.

The jaywalking law is ridiculous and that is the evidence that the lawmakers are also ridiculous. the purpose of all these laws about disracted driving, walking, etc seems to be the expansion of gov power rather than the feigned protection of idiots.

Yes, CEO's would just avoid a special tax aimed at them. Yes it would be a clear example,but only on the books, of discrimination against a certain set of people, i.e. CEO's. And yes it would be a smokescreen designed to benefit the CEO's and the lawmakers at the expense of the rest of us.
