KUDOES to the Barack Obama administration for continuing this George W. Bush program. It is one of the four things I have long said should be done to bring our borders under control:

1.) Build a GOOD fence/wall/etc. along the entire border

2.) Hire enough Border patrol personnel to patrol it adequately

3.) Prosecute CEOs and personnel managers of companies who knowingly hire illegal aliens

4.) Check for possible illegal-alien status of EVERYONE who comes into contact with the police or justice departments (speeding ticket, shoplifting, assault, all other crimes) and deport all illegal aliens found.

Good inroads have been made in the first three, though they are a long way from "adequately finished". And now this one, IF it is actually done, would make a big dent in #4.

If you entered the country illegally, and then do something that brings you to the attention of the cops, you should be deported back to your country of origin. (And the US should take measures to make sure you don't come ack in, see first three points above).

Obviously we can't just check everybody for illegal-alien status, we'd have to go door to door, stop people on the street, etc., and demand, "YOUR PAPERS, PLEASE!!" The country most famous for doing that, rolled over and died in 1990 or so, and we have no wish to emulate them. Doing it when people apply for jobs, is bad enough. We must limit our other checks to people who have already come into contact with law enforcement on their own.

BTW, I corrected the title, which originally described "immigration checks". "Immigrants" are people who legally entered the country, and we're not checking for those. "Illegal aliens" are people who entered illegally, and that is the correct term to use for these checks.

BTBTW, check out the hilarious quote from a liberal at the end of this excerpt. He keeps repeating "We really mean it, we're serious this time", etc. etc. He evidently well knows that nobody believe liberals when they call for stricter law enforcement, on illegal aliens or anything else.

U.S. to Expand Immigration Checks to All Local Jails
Obama Administration's Enforcement Push Could Lead to Sharp Increase in Deportation Cases

The Obama administration is expanding a program initiated by President George W. Bush aimed at checking the immigration status of virtually every person booked into local jails. In four years, the measure could result in a tenfold increase in illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes and identified for deportation, current and former U.S. officials said.

By matching inmates' fingerprints to federal immigration databases, authorities hope to pinpoint deportable illegal immigrants before they are released from custody. Inmates in federal and state prisons already are screened. But authorities generally lack the time and staff to do the same at local jails, which house up to twice as many illegal immigrants at any time and where inmates come and go more quickly.

The effort is likely to significantly reshape immigration enforcement, current and former executive branch officials said. It comes as the Obama administration and Democratic leaders in Congress vow to crack down on illegal immigrants who commit crimes, rather than those who otherwise abide by the law.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has made it "very clear" that her top priority is deporting illegal immigrants who have committed crimes, said David J. Venturella, program director at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"We mean this, we're serious about it, and we believe we need to put in an all-out effort to get this done," said Rep. David E. Price (D-N.C.), chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee for homeland security.
