I am sixty-four years old. Whites of my age tell me not to blame them for what their grandparents did, yet we all were born when Jim Crow was the written law of the land, and because of what some of you were taught as children, we ended up getting into fights on streets, playgrounds, and schoolyards. While many whites stopped having racist beliefs, many have not. While you tell me not to blame you for what your grandparents did, whites who are my age grew up in suburban developments like Levittown because of government-guaranteed loans blacks could not get. Being that I am from the Midwest, I know some whites live on family-owned land passed down due to homesteading.
Yet today, many of them stand up declaring they have never benefitted because of race. I believe it is time for some of us to understand that living in the past is not possible, but things that occur in the past impact us now. We are all here because of acts performed in the past that ended up with us being born. We do not forget those who made our lives possible. As Americans, we should face all of our history, not just the part that makes some of us feel superior.
Collective amnesia has swept across the land. After whites were given land as part of the Homestead Act, I am sure they worked very hard to farm that land. After whites were given loans guaranteed by the government to buy homes, I am pretty sure they worked hard to make the payments. I’m sure that white person who got a business loan blacks were denied only because of race, worked hard to make sure that business was successful. While blacks could not get certain jobs because of race, I’m sure whites who were hired worked hard to remain employed. I’m sure that the whites who got admitted into colleges that did not allow blacks worked hard to get those degrees.
The issue is not how hard whites worked after they got the opportunity. It is the fact that they got the chance while others didn’t because of skin color. Some have tried making this an argument about payment for slavery, but the argument goes far beyond slavery. The damage caused by atrocities committed against blacks after slavery are numerous and are the reason many blacks suffer right now.
It is time that we stop believing what we want and start believing what is real. Blacks and whites have had different experiences in America. Racial classifications were first developed by Carolus Linnaeus, then further by Frances Bernier and Johann Blumenach. The concept of racial supremacy was started by whites. In this country, whites are responsible for starting racism and creating a system that enforces white supremacy. Whites are the ones who can end what whites started. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of whites to end it instead of whining about how "he hates the white man" and looking for ways to call blacks racists..
