if you reset the start point of the Aussie GDP to say 1975 you will see that GDP has trended downward from then to now. as your beloved socialism has firmed it's hold, your nation's success has diminished. but I believe you know that already.

Dogtower and Gipper We had manly a conservative government from 1975 to 2007. It was in 1975 that the last socialist Prime Minister was dismissed.We have a labor government now but next year it is likely to be a Conservative government.
ah, so perhaps your fortunes will pick up then ! our countries are blessed with abundant natural resources which give us huge advantages if we wish to avail ourselves.

The meaning of Conservative in your land and my land are two different things. A conservative in your land looks similar to Obama...hence you think Obama is NOT a socialist.

You are right. Conservative parties in other countries are left of your Republican party. In fact ours is call a Liberal Party. Definition of words differ in every country. No party as extreme as the Republican would be elected in Australia. For the same reason I doubt if a Socialist would be elected in your country.
Even among Labor there are moderates and extremist. The last Labor government I regard as Socialist was Whitlam elected in 1972 and dismissed in 1975 by the Governor General. We had a moderate Labor government in the 1980s but I would not call it Socialist. The present Labor government is also moderate. However our Opposition leader appears an extreme conservative , unlike other conservative governments of the recent past. However I do not think he will try to dismantle Welfare legislation as he would not stay in office long if he did.

The Rs are far from extreme, but you keep accepting those silly left wing talking points that apparently make it all the way to the land down under. You have been told American Ds good and Rs bad. And you dutifully accept that nonsense like many Americans.
Most Rs in our government are moderate progressives. They have helped the Ds (really commies) to expand the power and size of government for decades. In effect, they are pushing socialism lite.
You love socialism even though it is responsible for most of the economic problems around the world and numerous other more heinous things. Why?

What is the standard by which you determine whether a politcian or party is Socialist? You thought Whitlam was a Socialist but consider the current labor leader a moderate. Since both are members of the same party, I think we'd all like to know what it is you believe makes one a Socialist and the other a Moderate.
Gipper, Why is it so hard to believe that the political parties in Australia and the USA are different. Most of the Republican policies would not be tolerated in Australia, For example free gun ownership, No government provided medical care, Tax cuts for the rich,and Cuts to social security.
Recently two Australian swimmers were punish for posing with guns in an American gun shop. Would that happen there?
The Whitlam government was socialist in giving free university fees. This was abolished by later Labor and Conservative governments.

Australia may be one thing but here in the states free gun ownership is a part of the Constitution. If a party is NOT in favor of free gun ownership then that is the party that is extreme.
Though anywhere in the world freedom should be admired.

I assume you mean tax paid for medical care for all citizens.
Again taking money from one citizen to give it to another is the opposite of freedom. Furthermore there is no need for such a freedom killing initiative since the care can be provided just as well in ways that do not impede on freedom.
