SANFORD - A family driving west on Interstate 4 in a silver Mercedes-Benz on Sunday evening made the men in the black Chevrolet Tahoe mad.

The Mercedes had cut them off, the Tahoe's driver later told a Seminole County deputy, so front-seat passenger John Thomas Taylor dropped his pants and mooned the family, including their 14-year-old son, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Chris White, chief of operations at the Seminole County State Attorney's Office, said his office had not yet decided what charge, if any, to file.

If convicted of the charge alleged by the Sheriff's Office, Taylor could face up to 15 years in prison and forever be identified as a sex offender.

Now I see they are still wondering if to file charges or not, but that's not the point. The fact that the possibility even exists is PURELY ABSURD. People being put on the list for peeing in bushes, streaking at colleges, and other things people have done for ages, is RIDICULOUS. Sex Offender Registration should ONLY exist for those accused of TRULY SEXUAL OFFENSES, Rape, Molestation, and Exposing oneself with the intent of sexual gratification etc.

Mooning is not sexual at all. Or am I committing a sex crime here?

please discuss.

I couldn't agree more. The sex offenders register will become meangingless, and these people are not even commiting a real crime anyway.

I agree. I really do not like the idea of sex offender registries when such a broad range of crimes from simple idiocy to actual criminal behavior can be defined as such and can ruin a person's life forever.

Mooning is a part of life everyone should be subjected to and do themselves.

A totally agree. Just think...without mooning, how could we have come up with such classics as this (to the tune of "Age of Aquarius") - by Sean Morey:

when the moon is hanging out a window,
some imbicil is proud of his behind
you now receive way too much info
and the image is burned into your mind
there's nothing grosser than a man with a hairy ass!
a man with a hairy ass!
everybody!
A hairy ass!

every chair is nice and cooshy,
when you have a bushy tooshy,
you make it look more dapper,
if you buy a good weed wacker,
doesn't help a girl's libido, when you wear a tight speedoo..

A hairy ass!!
Everybody! a hairy ass!!

When a girl is lying in the darkness,
her new lover is lying in her bed,
she runs her fingers down his body,
and lets out a scream that wakes the dead!
her hands are tangled up in his scary, hairy ass!
his scary, hairy ass!

A hairy ass!!
Everybody! a hary ass!!

I'm glad to see no naysayers to this line of thinking. I'm just aghast at the number of "crimes" that end with people on these lists...No no...I'm aghast at the fact that a lot of this stuff is criminal... here is another from Oregon this time;

Two middle-school students in Oregon are facing possible time in a juvenile jail and could have to register as sex offenders for smacking girls on the rear end at school.

this is pure nonsense. I'm sure these two RECENT stories are just the tip of the iceberg here. On a related note; here are some more

-- Two teenage girls face child pornography charges after posting sexually explicit photographs of themselves on the Internet.

The pornographic pictures of Elizabeth Muller, 19, of North Smithfield, and an unidentified 16-year-old Lincoln girl were discovered on MySpace.com, a social networking Web site, said a spokesman for the attorney general's office.

Wilson, 21, was convicted of aggravated child molestation for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, during a 2003 New Year's Eve party in Douglas County, just west of Atlanta, Georgia.

Wilson was also charged with raping a 17-year-old girl at the party -- who prosecutors maintained was too intoxicated to consent -- but jurors acquitted him on that charge.

Under the state law in effect at the time, Wilson received a mandatory 10-year sentence and has already served more than two years.

Partly as a result of Wilson's conviction, state legislators changed the law to make such consensual conduct between teenagers a misdemeanor, rather than a felony. But that change wasn't made retroactive, so it did not affect Wilson.

Now mind you in this previous story, statutory rape occurred. I have a problem with this however in that, if kids go to school together, treated equally, age not-withstanding, in a peer setting, this then appears to be highly ridiculous. After the outcry from this case, GA. changed the law, so this would not happen again, however they applied a non-retroactive order on the law, so he is still incarcerated. I cannot figure the ideology behind this course of action, if the case itself moved legislators to CHANGE the law so as to not go through this same type of case again, wouldn't it make complete sense to absolve the original offense that garnered the change; discuss.

All of these previous cases show insane applications of laws meant to protect children, yet in turn PUNISH children. It's nonsense. Is anyone going to do anything about this? Where has the common sense gone?! Such broad and general application of laws with highly arbitrary numbers involved is a danger to society, a danger to personal freedoms, and the ruiner of these young lives who all end up on sex offender registries. I'm sickened by this.

On a further related note, however not simply applicable to young people, is the charge of rape when someone is intoxicated. Someone in the cases is a woman. What I have a problem with here is that often at a bar, both parties (male & female) are consuming alcohol. so both consume equal amounts of drink, go home, have sex; The man has committed rape, even if she consented. Why? Because she cannot consent under the influence of alcohol since she is not considered legally able to provide consent. Yet again a night out at the club can end with a man on the registry. The inequality of these laws should inhibit BOTH parties from being charged with such ridiculous violations. While giving drugs or intentionally causing some sort of intoxication to the point of inability to say no (not intoxicated to the point where they say yes, when sober they'd say no, since this responsibility should remain with the person.) with intent to have sex would be viable to me, her drinking on her own accord should have no bearing on such a case. My problem with this law is it arbitrarily places a level of intoxication where consent and/or responsibility of ones own actions are no longer legally bound to them. Yet if this girl who cannot legally give consent due to intoxication were to drive she'd be held responsible for her actions, how can those actions that cater to the law's overzealousness be considered her responsibility when the responsibility of consent has been removed? Again sickening.

dang, you beat me to it.

The sex offender list is getting out of hand in the same way that the overly broad definition of sexual harassment is. Things that are getting tossed in the lump with much nastier things are trivializing some very real crimes.
And the inclusion of non-dangerous "sex offenders" on the same registry as rapists and mollesters makes the whole system useless in the "boy that cried wolf" fashion.
