Far From Happy Christmas for Christians in the Holy Land

There are 14 million Christians throughout the Holy Land but they are a rapidly dwindling minority. Many of them are so desperately vulnerable that they feel they have no choice now but to emigrate. In Iraq alone, since the fall of Saddam, a startling two-thirds have fled. Since 2003 at least a million have left.

Most of them went to Syria. Now they face a second wave of displacement as they are no longer protected there. There have been reports of rape, murder and attacks directed at them and the Christian community lives in terror.

When they feel they have to run for their lives they head for Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. It is said that the ancient Syrian Armenian community has all but gone.

Muslim Groups Are Reportedly Circulating This Illustration of Santa Getting Punched in the Face

As Christians around the world celebrate Christmas, Muslim activists in Turkey are lashing out at a most beloved symbol of the season: Santa Claus.

Hurriyet Daily News reported on Christmas Eve that a Muslim youth group and a neighborhood association launched “anti-Santa campaigns” in Turkey.

The Anatolia Youth Association’s Istanbul University branch released an illustration of a bearded Muslim punching St. Nick in the face. The group said it plans to make a public statement against Christmas on Dec. 26, according to the Turkish news site.

According to several accounts, the banner read: “New Year and Christmas celebrations NO!”

Lebanon Christian Library with 80,000 Books Is Burned Down After Owner Was Falsely Accused of Insulting Islam, Mohammed

A Christian library in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli was intentionally burned down on Friday night after its owner, a Greek Orthodox priest, was falsely accused of writing an article insulting Islam and the prophet Mohammed.

Assailants set fire to the Saeh Library, destroying two-thirds of the collection of 80,000 books and manuscripts, the French news agency Agence France-Presse reported.

Libya's Coptic Christians, who number about 300,000, or 5 percent of the population, were allowed to practice their faith under dictator Muammar Qaddafi. But since the strongman was ousted from power, and ultimately killed, Muslim fundamentalists have increasingly filled the power void. Last month, the national assembly voted in favor of making Koranic law, or Shariah, the basis of all legislative decisions, meaning Islam will shape all future banking, criminal and financial cases.
