Congress makes the tax rules and the social benefit rules. Which ever side I am on, the social benefit recipient or the high income tax payer who looks for loopholes, I am going to understand the rules perfectly and take advantage of every government give away.

Every so often my Republican Representative sends me mail saying (for example) he's doing great things for the vets. I guess our district has a lot of vets. I am a vet from the Vietnam War, and I think vets have plenty of benefits - especially free health care for any reason (not just battle related). But, over the years I have taken every benefit offered - from buying a house to getting a master's degree.

Do I vote for members of Congress because 1) they will give me free things? Or 2)because I think they will make good laws? The answer is #2.

But my Representative will keep on passing benefits for vets - whether they need it or not. He is not going to buy my vote this way. But if a new law comes out with benefits for Vets, I will be the first in line to take the money.

Our Congressmen need to stop pandering and start solving the huge fiscal mess we are in - cut loopholes AND cut social benefits. Our government needs only to provide a safety net to the poor... not gold-plated handouts. But whatever you want to give me, I will take.

America today is a LOT more what our founders envisionned. A country made up of DIVERSITY and EQUAL RIGHTS for ALL.
The fact is that Whites do not have as many babies as Blacks and Hispanics. . .so, no matter what you do, no matter if not ONE more Hispanic migrate to the US (legally or not), the percentage of Hispanics and Blacks relative to Whites will CONTINUE to increase. And unless the Republican party TRULY embraces diversity, they will go the way of the dinosaurs!

And I am ALL for taking care of our veterans (many are NON WHITE, by the way, especially in the younger ones!), and I am glad and grateful that our soldiers are willing to risk their life to protect us. . .I also agree that the pay they receive (even today, if they are simply grunts) is ridiculously low. In the other hand, if they make a career of it, they can expect to retire at the great old age of 45. . . and then use the training they got in the military (those who choose to and have the ability to) to find a well renumerated job, while also receiving their military pension. And I certainly do not complain about that. In fact my husband earn 90% of his engineering training while serving in the Navy for 12 years, and he used that very specialized (and at the time, on the very edge of technology) training to become an international director in a large computer industry company.

But I would love for you to tell me which war we engaged in in the last 50 years where AMERICA THE HOMELAND was actually in need of DEFENSE? Unfortunately, in my opinion, what we have done in the last 50 years is put our nose where it didn't belong and showed a lot of arrogance that has KILLED and MAIMED A LOT OF OUR SOLDIERS.

So I believe that, in the future, this needs to be totally revised so that we do not send our soldiers to START wars for "the glory," and even less for "big business interests!" In fact, how many of those wars have we REALLY won?
