No idea, Columbus was the most recognized of the "discoverers of the new world" but many had come before and after him of their own volition. I'm sure he'd likely be mentioned in passing as many others are that I can't really think of off hand, usually the reference is to their boat not the captain, since he did nothing of note but sink. as far as how would the US be now? If columbus hadn't, someone else wouldv'e from what country, in what way? Who knows.
