NASA: six decades of a warming earth

The evidence of a warming Earth is undeniable, and yet, many people want to try to deny it, not based on the science, but on politics.
The NIPCC deniers are partially right when they say that there has been no warming for 16 years. It looks to be more like 10 or 12 years of no warming from the IPCC's data. They probably have a different spin on the statistics. You can see it in Walter's video. From around 2003 and beyond, the colors bubble around but seem to have the same general look after 2003.

However the IPCC data also shows the ocean level rising at an increasing rate from 1993-2013. This would mostly come from thermal expansion of a warmer ocean, and melting ice. On a hot day you can stabilize the temperature of your tea with ice, but the total energy is dropping as the ice melts due to the large heat of fusion. (The amount of heat required to convert a unit mass of a solid at its melting point into a liquid without an increase in temperature.) When the ice is gone, the thermal energy stops going into melting the ice. It then goes into heating your tea.

So deniers say there is no warming just on the basis of surface temperature, when the total thermal energy is what is important. So it's possible that we can savor the coolness of our "ice tea" weather until our ice melts.
