Have you wondered WHY, in this post-9/11 era, the obvious red flags exhibited by the Ft. Hood shooter and the Dec.24 airline bomber, never got through to where they could be acted upon?

Could it be that our intelligence agencies, fearing further prosecutions, blame, and career-ending tirades and accusations from our highest elected officials, at some point decided to delay passing on certain opinions or warnings until they could bild airtight cases and complete the CYA needed to protect themselves?

Background: Dick Morris is a lifelong Democrat who voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996, but voted for George Bush in 2000 and 2004 since, he said, defense against terrorism was overy important in those years and he favored Bush's approach ove the Democrats'. He is a campaign consultant who has worked for Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and a variety of international figures.

And, like Joe Lieberman, though his politics are mainstream liberal, his views on defense are actually sensible.

The Consequences of Obama: Terrorism is Back

by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann
January 5, 2010

Rev. Jeremiah Wright said that the "chickens came home to roost" on 9-11. He was wrong. But they have now, indeed, come home to roost as we witness the results of the unilateral disarmament President Obama has practiced in the war on terror. Beset once more by terrorism on our soil and in our airspace, we find ourselves suddenly overmatched by those who the Bush Administration kept away from our shores for seven years.

This new onset of terrorism is not the product of any change in the international environment or some new "systemic" flaw in our intelligence operations. It is due to the policy of President Obama in letting down our guard and inhibiting those charged with our protection.

Under Obama, the hunters have become the hunted as America inverted her priorities. Those who have been working to keep us safe have, themselves, come under scrutiny for profiling, harsh interrogation techniques, and a failure to give terrorists constitutional rights they don't have.

The result is predictable: Timidity and caution have become the order of the day in our intelligence community. In a world where hunch, guesswork, and a willingness to leap to conclusions by imagining the worst are vital to success, a cover your butt mentality has taken over. If you come to the wrong conclusion, if you profile without adequate justification, if you accuse incorrectly, you are finished. Your career and your pension will be gone. Guess right and you are accorded anonymity. Guess wrong and you're through.

The failure of the intelligence operatives to pass along the information about the Ft. Hood shooter or the airline bomber did not flow from a blind spot or a lack of co-ordination, they stemmed from terrorism of a different sort -- the terror of making a mistake and falling on the harsh mercies of Eric Holder.

Now Nigerian terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutall sits, lawyered up, in a federal prison. His interrogation will proceed, if at all, under the watchful eye of his counsel. He will not finger other operatives nor warn us of other impending attacks. He will receive the full panoply of constitutional rights, none of which he is entitled to.

Barack Obama does not seem to understand that these terrorists come here to use our laws and our system, not to protect us, not even to shelter themselves, but to destroy us.

Abdulmutall should be interrogated by the military, without benefit of counsel. [Editor's Note: As prisoners of war have always been, ever since there has been war among otherwise-civilized nations. -LA] The evidence we obtain should not be admissible in a court of law nor used as the basis for his sentencing. But it must be used to ward off future threats and attacks.

But Obama is a true believer. His persistence in downgrading the war on terror to a criminal investigation will continue. And we will experience more and more attacks. Because pessimism is the bodyguard of liberalism, he will explain to us that the world has become more threatening and that he is doing all he can to keep us safe. But the truth will be that it will have been his policies and priorities that are leaving us exposed.

And the attacks will continue.

With the terror attacks now starting to occur again, and the obvious screwups in forwarding intelligence information that could have prevented them, what chance do you suppose there is for Obama to recognize the real causes for those screwups, and start supporting his intelligence services instead of trying to prosecute them for doing their jobs?

It is my opinion that the President took his eye off the ball. Bush made mistakes regarding our borders, and now Pres. Obama is compounding the error. Why haven't we been negotiating with key international hubs to tighten security? Why haven't we been freezing the assets of Yemen nationals? They talk about stimulus money being used for HLS, but the number of Nitrate sniffing machines has gone down at TSA checkpoints.

Took his eye OFF "the ball"????

Hell....it's lookin' like the Obama Admin hasn't even found "the ball" that BUSHCO "DROPPED"!!!!!!

Maye Obama needs to worry about the "balls" he's got to contend with right now.

He's the one in charge. It's his responsibility not to drop the ball and to focus on the security of the U.S.

I'm concerned that he wants immediate action as opposed to appropriate and effective action. Haste makes waste. Clearly you want PROMPT action but calling for immediate is worrisome.

That almost makes sense.

The lack o' details was especially eye-opening.

How long does it take a President to find the dropped ball? Is a year not long enough to create a strategy for Afghanastan, Pakistan, Gitmo, our borders, or preventative action against terrorist acts?

I'm tired of the reactionary tactics by the last 3 administrations. How about a valid strategy. For example...why are we guarding against bombers getting on planes? Why not guard against them getting into airports? The technology is here and three airports I know of use it already. Why aren't we installing it in every U.S. airport. Do we have to wait until a suicide bomber runs into the baggage check line on a holiday weekend before we see that one coming?

I get your point, but how long can we give this President a free ride on all of this stuff. Give me a date when we can start making him accountable? Same goes for this Congress...when can we start holding them accountable.

Yeah....Republicans have been soooooooooooooo much help.

"When Senator Jim DeMint personally and individually kept the appointed director of the Transportation Security Agency from being able to not only have a fair hearing and actually receive that appointment, he placed the traveling American public at increased physical risk to terrorist attacks. And now that he's showing an incredible amount of cowardice by first denying that he ever did it and by nuancing that this is all about collective bargaining."

Even a radical leftist can see Obama's failure. Maureen Dowd of the New York Prada Slimes dumps on BO. This is very well stated.

If we can’t catch a Nigerian with a powerful explosive powder in his oddly feminine-looking underpants and a syringe full of acid, a man whose own father had alerted the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a traveler whose ticket was paid for in cash and who didn’t check bags, whose visa renewal had been denied by the British, who had studied Arabic in Al Qaeda sanctuary Yemen, whose name was on a counterterrorism watch list, who can we catch?

And the next walk in a mall, so make malls armed fortresses...so next ones hit a office building.....Fact is, that the goal of terrorism does not only apply on a airplane, or in a airport...they just have wet dreams about them for some reason...and each time we will say..why did they not have x there...fact is we will get hit, and they will find ways around our Security..unless we want to turn into East Germany or something.

Just like you can racial Profile...only to hear the crys after...why did this guy not get noticed? sorry he was white or black and from Canada or something...they have a world reach, they can , will and have found people who don't fit profiles to help them.

Unless we want to strip seach inside and out evry person that walks into a airport...they will always be risks, and those who want, in time, will find ways to attack...

There will be those who will sacrifice evrything for safey, but they are whimps and should just stay home and hide from the world...To go to the extreams we would need to be "Safe" are not things I would want in a Free Society. what we need is more money, more manpower, and more people who understand the terrorist and motives...not more poltical crying that one leader is somehow responsible for our intel people getting the info, but not able to put it all together....While people cry Obama should have.x...they need to shut up and think for once...becuse fact is, most of the Politicy in place...was in fact set up before he was in office...Sure someone could have fixed it after...but there is plenty of blame here to act like this is somehow all Obamas fault or Bush's....The failing sounds like it happened due to a turf war, or just a lack of someone being able to put the puzzle together, or maybe there was a system lacking to get the info to someone with correct knowlage to work see the pattern.....most of the info, by themself The CIA when they got word that the father thought his son may have fallen in with radicals...looked at it and thought it was more of a father worried about a missing son....had they also have teh intel that others had that a group in Yemon was possibly working on a plan with someone who fit a very basic description of the son, could have figured maybe there was more to it, but even with the same intel,,,,,not evryone may think, welll clearly its the same person....but maybe it may have been enough to get more intel...but we will never know now.

Most important is that try to share our intel as best we can, and get the best we can to look over it and try to make heads and tails of what is talk, what is real, and who is a religious exreamist...vs who is actuly willing to commit terrorism...

Funny there hasn't been any roll back of any of the Bush security procedures implimented... except we stopped TORTURING people (I know how that bugs the TORTURERS on the Right).

But even that being the case that's what you'd have to do after you captured somebody.

As I clearly recall the things our President Obama has done he has spoke out very strongly against terrorism multiple times and put into action a refocus on terrorists in Afghanistan sending in an additional 30,000 troops and hitting terrorist cells in multiple countries.

And here's what's really going on. Instead of helping and pulling together as AMERICANS to strengthen our homeland security Republicants like that completely psycho Jim DeMint are holding up things like a highly respected former FBI agent head for the TSA because he's afraid someday they might get collective bargaining! ARE YOU FRICKIN' KIDDING ME!

Don't let the real facts get in the way of your pitiful & groundless smear.

Good point, we are not safe under Obama no matter what they say!

This was as simple a catch as they come!

Way to pull together. Let's point fingers and bog the system down to the point that we can't even defend ourselves. Did dems get behind Bush? Do reps get behind Obama? Gee, let me think....

I got it! Reps would rather Obama fail than save innocents. Is Obama that repugnant to you?
